i get pics from friends via e-mail and i want to save them on my hard drive. But these jpegs somtime are huge (1 meg) probably taken with a digital camera at a high setting.

how can i shrink the jpeg to soemthing manageable on my hard drive?

you need a prog like photoshop - you can do 1 of 2 things
1 - make the picture smaller
2 - make the clarity less (say 60% instead of 100%)

or a combination - especially if you want to email or put on web, but dont want to go to a photo printer

Have Rosie come over and sit on it.

But I think there are some simple photo editing programs on Windows that can reduce the pallete of jpeg images, mainly "Imaging" in the Accessories menu (atleast on Windows2k).

You can resize a jpeg in the newer versions Microsoft Paint...

A JPEG is already compressed... that's kinda how it works. That's why if you put it into a zip file, it hardly gets any smaller, cause you can't really compress something that's already compressed.

But yeah, like the guys before me said, use an image editing program to decrease either the image size or the quality.

right but the quality can be varied - if I take a JPG with my camera at say 90% compression, and the file is, say 3 Mb, if I set the compression for 50% I get a file that may be 2mb. Resizing also helps.

I crate a pdf of large images when I e-mail. Everybody in the world has acrobat reader (it's free) and the files are tiny.
