There are a lot of Devils fans on this board - so please, help me out here. It cracks me up - the way you might laugh when watching lemmings follow each other over a cliff - that during a game, say, vs. the Flyers last Friday night (Tie 3-3), at random times during the game I would hear a "Rangers suck!" chant.

Yea, the Rangers suck, but what the hell game are they watching? I see the Flyers down on the ice. They're talking about the Rangers. I heard they did this at their Stanley Cup celebration as well.

The anger behind that has got to be a psychoanalysts dream.

I never understood that either. The Devils are soooo much better than the Rangers, who cares? Maybe because they get more press.

I tried starting a "Trade Brodeur" chant once, but it never really caught on. I felt bad because he had a shutout and always plays well.

As a Rangers fan myself (yes I'm aware the Rangers are an overpaid bunch of prima donnas), I think its awesome that Devils fans do stuff like that. Rivalries are the best part of sports, nothing beats a good Potvin sucks chant no matter who the Rangers are playing.
I know when I get the occasional ticket to a Devils game I always wear my Rangers jersey even if they're playing Colorado, sure I take a lot of shit from the fans but that's the best part, the beer drinking, the fighting and the yelling at each other.

I'm a Devils fan and I always thought the '(team name) sucks' chant should be for the opposition on the ice. Then again, the Rangers fans always have a 'Flyers suck' chant going so maybe it's some converted Rangers fans bringing it across the river with them. I dunno.

To someone's credit, though, they did have a nice 'Flyers suck' chant going at Friday's game.

It is this simple...for years upon years....12 or close to. The Rangers would beat upon the Devils whenever they played each other. Especially during the late 80's and Early 90's. The height of ranger fan arrogance was in 1994 when they won the Stanely Cup. (which I think they DID deserve after putting on the best hockey I have ever seen in the Eastern Conference Finals) I had to witness this first hand by living with my two brothers who were and are die hard ranger fans.
However when the Devils rose to the top and stayed there the fans have not forgotten the shitty treatment from Ranger Fans. So now the Hatfields and the McCoys have open fired again. And Again. And Again.
They are just mimicing the Rangersc"Potvin Sucks" Chant they do at the Garden. (Dennis Potvin was the Isles captain during their Heyday of the early 80's)
It is just our small way of repaying the kindness of the rangers fans for those years.
lol...Now I just pity them.

And yes I am a VERY proud Devils fan.

They never play that song at the arena anymore because they know everyone will yell 'Rangers suck' at the end. That's why a bunch of guys have to yell the song so everyone can yell 'Rangers suck' at the end.

If they're going to go that far, it would be nice and throw a little anger towards whomever the Devils are playing that night. Maybe I should just do it myself.

The Rangers will always suck. I just think it loses some of the edge when they are truly an awful team, such as they are now.

OK, sure. But they are not even THERE. Do you think someone will call up the Rangers organization and say "You're not gonna believe what they are chanting over here. They think you suck. I even heard them use swear words."

There is no point in chanting that when they are not around. It makes the group chanting look like there is a short, yellow school bus outside the arena waiting to take them home.

Talk about and inferiority complex, why would Devils fans even care about what the lowly Rangers are doing?

Maybe its because no matter how many cups the Devils win they'll always be known as an expansion team from a lousy state playing in a half empty arena in the middle of a swamp.
