my laptop is getting killed with popups now...i must have adware or something because my computer's "working" light is always on even if i'm not doing anything...and popups come up.

I got one that i thought was free and it only SCANNED for free and it wanted like 40 bucks to delete all the shit on my computer harddrive..

thanks buddays

second vote for adaware - easy to use and finds a LOT of stuff, plus they put out a lot of data file updates.

Spybot (http://security.kolla.de/)

Good filters, easy to use and updated often, I use this and Adaware and I've got nothing.

Just wanted to second the throngs...I had the same problem you had, and then got both Spybot and Adaware. Can't even tell anything was wrong at this point.

I use Norton Internet Security. It's kind of a pain in the ass at first because you have to personally authorize everything that logs onto the internet, but after about 3 days, it's smooth sailing.

I recently downloaded and ran ad-aware. It flagged a bunch of files with the name backweb in them. My pc allowed most but not all to be deleted. Now I am getting pop up error messages saying backweb cannot run because of missing files. The files that are left are associated with musicmatch jukebox which i don't use. I still can't delete them. The error pop ups are getting on my nerves any suggestions?

Jax, I have no idea how to help you, but maybe remove it and start from scratch and look carefully at what you click "yes" to. Worth a shot!

I have Adaware as well, and Id like to also have Spybot thats mentioned here. Some of you have both, do you have difficulty having both? Id like to know.

No, using Spybot and Ad-Aware together causes no problems. It's good because often one picks up something that the other doesn't.

jax, run adaware. Those files that adaware can't delete, delete by hand.

And spybot warns you that it makes backups of files that adaware may find as spyware. Not a big deal, just delete them or let adaware delete them.

With XP you must run Adaware and Spybot in each user that you have setup, especially true if they are all administrators. We recently found this tidbit of information while working in some PC's.
