Just watched the movie Roxanne from the 80's starring Steve Martin. I love that movie, ever since I saw it when I was kid. I was just curious about what it was based. I know it was Cyrano de Bergerac, and he was a guy with a big nose. But how faithful was the storyline of Roxanne. Was the original a book or a play or something else? When was it written? Anything anyone can add would be appreciated.
Interesting side note: minor characters played by Damon Wayans and Kevin Nealon

the part that he was a fire fighter was true and the bar scene with the dart board is also true
however the standind in the bushes and giving the lines to the girl in the window is all bullshit
but the story does follow it pretty well as far as i can remember
but i do think someone dies in Cyrano i can't remember that though so don't quote me on that one

Dingo, good recap but you forgot about the alien robot from the future that came back in time to save humanity.
major point in the plot that wasnt in the movie.

no no no you are confusing Cyrano with Don Quhoite (sp) the windmills were the transdemental receiver that allowed the robot to come back in time its ok a lot of people make that same mistake

Doh! I thought that was the plot to "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Oh wait a minute, that one had the dude with the machine who could enter your dreams and kill you there, wasnt it?

I've loved "Roxanne" since I was a kid, especially the scene where he's in the bar and is dared to come up with a bunch of jokes better than "big nose". Then I saw the movie again about 2 weeks ago, to realize it's not funny, at all. I was shattered. Same thing happened recently while catching old episodes of "Saved by the Bell". I'm not sure who I am anymore...

Bowie, Md.: Berkeley, I'm so glad you're back!; I've really missed The Far Side all these years.
Berkeley Breathed: Yes, thank you, but I don't draw Far Side. I draw Calvin and Hobbes.

I think you just made a mistake. Wasn't it Don Corleone and the windmills?

Yes! We learned about those in History class.
Actually I lie. I didn't have history class. It was called social studies. And I learned nothing.
I'm currently in the middle of two books (one being the third volume of Shelby Foote's complete history of the civil war. Lee has surrendered to Grant, Johnston has surrenderd to Sherman, Lincoln has been shot, and yet there is still 100+ pages to go). Maybe when i'm done those i'll try to find a copy of the book.

The original was a french play by a guy named Edmond Rostand which I seem to recall reading in french class. Except for all the modern stuff, the basic storyline was exactly like the movie Roxanne.

The movie seemed to be missing the whole convent part at the end.

In Cyrano dr Bergarac, the guy who plays this guy is the guy that taunted Captian Kirk and froze to death in Scrooged. Yeah yeah yeah-yeah yeah

Growing up, it was one of my sister's favorite movies, but I could never stand it. At least the dart board scene is still amusing. Caught the one scene on cable recently.
