The Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who has built large-scale sculptures in several cities around the world, including one outside the United Nations complex in New York, is planning to build a 100-foot-tall, 176-ton bronze obelisk on the Jersey City waterfront, somewhere between the northern edge of Liberty State Park and Exchange Place.

Rising along the water's edge - or, as one proposal has it, from out of the river itself - Tsereteli's monument, called "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism," will consist of a 100-foot-tall rectangular bronze block with a fissure down the middle.

It is a big ugly obelisk with a huge vagina shaped "fissure" taking up the entire middle. Sideways it reminds me of the first imprint the planes left in the Twin Towers. I find this in bad taste for a memorial. It's REALLY awful. Are we spending taxpayer money on this piece of crap?

Here's a link to the story (http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-2/1071659521101260.xml)

Whoever can find the picure and post it here will shock us all.
There's a photo in the Jersey Journal today. YEEECH!

I cant find a picture of this thing. It's ugly, believe me you. I'd rather have a homeless shelter or methadone clinic next door to me than to have to look at this big, ugly hole. Memorial Schmorial. It's a fucking building with a fucking Airplane crashed through it. WTF?!?

Apparently so does Mr. Tsereteli. This is the side view, straight on, it really is an airplane driven through a vagina.

I like this (http://slate.msn.com/id/2091407/) for a memorial. Unfortunately, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation bounced it because the designer "technically" submitted more than one design.

I live in Jersey City and hate how the waterfront has been so built up in the 13 years I've lived here. I love Fred Bernstein's design. He should pitch it to Jersey City Mayor Cunningham.

EXACTLY. Especially with the amount of people who lost their lives on 9/11. Nothing would be more powerful and fitting than a memorial that just focused on their NAMES and gave the dead some power in their lost lives and identities.

Wow, this is interesting, because the exact same thing happened with the Wall.

-THATS It? A Dark Slab in the ground? You have all these memorials of White stone columns, and we get a fucking wall, half buried in the ground so you can't even see it from the other side. Pathetic.

-The Names? They're in the wrong Order? It doesnt even go left to right! And you can't SEE the Names! This is insanity.

The above was the opinion of a Whole Lotta people when the final design was revealed. And it didn't end there. People protested the design up until it's completing, and after.

The history of the design competition for the Viet Nam Memorial is fascinating stuff.

I remember the story of the Wall, it is interesting, and telling that memorials are going to be controversial. They have to address subjects that effect emotions for so many different people. And the Wall doesn't have to be replicated. But that thing that's in that picture up there says only one thing: "look at how ugly this was." That's not good enough. That says nothing about the heroism displayed by the NY Fire and Police Departments, the teamsters who just showed up and worked round the clock, and all the other acts of selflessness that are a part of that day and after. I don't know what a piece of art would have to look like to properly memorialize that day, but that thing doesn't do it.

can we all agree that art sucks. say there was a meteor or some such natural disaster that ravaged the earth back to the dark ages.

hundreds of years later, society begins to rebuild itself, archeologists begin to uncover artifacts from this time. what do they make of this statue.

the problem with contemporary art is that you need to read a dicertation regarding the piece prior to viewing.

I dont even know why we consider anything that artists from other countrys submit to a memorial. What is there a shortage of American artists? This flimsy looking shit and these unusual looking junk structures these dickheads make lately have absolutely no dignity or value other than to cause anyone who stumbles upon it to scratch their heads and say "what the fuck is that?"

My nephew went to school to be an archetect and I use to see all these weird building designs that he would bring in, and I would think to myself, why when designing a structure that you intend to last for a long time, would you make it look like that? That crack in the sculpture above will eventually be inhabited by pigeons and theyll crap all over it and make it look even more disgusting, dont they think about that?

Yeah, something simple. The best memorials have a nice, simple, bold composition.
Look at the Marine Corps Memorial, the Lincoln, the Jefferson...
Then look at the Korean War Memorial.
It suffers from the clutter of too many elements in it.

I think the WWII memorial in DC will have the same problem.
And why do they all seem to have to include theatres and other such "educational" add ons? Let people learn about the subject of the memorial elsewhere.
