I noticed something annoying about DVD's that have both Wide Screen (which I prefer) on one side and Full Screen on the other. Regular DVD's that dont have anything on their reverse, except a label differ in that you know which side to put into the drawer. But, if one side says Wide Screen on it, and the other Full Screen, its difficult to tell without waiting for the movie to start and then you have to stop it and flip it over if you wanted to see it the other way. What I find is that the side that says Wide Screen is backwards! I hate that.

I have also been fooled a few times buying a DVD that says "Full Screen" thinking its Wide Screen, but have since learned my lesson.

What format do you prefer?

Widescreen all the way. Fullscreen is for sucks.

I purchased a laserdisc player back in the day because I couldn't stomach the pan and scan format of most VHS tapes.

Not to get too technical, but I can watch a 1.85/1 ratio film in fullscreen, but a 2.35/1? Gimme a break.

Widescreen. Definitely widescreen. I'd much rather have the black bars from watching a widescreen movie on a 4:3 tv screen than suffer through pan and scan. Also, I like to see the composition of the shots in the way intended by the director.

I always choose widescreen.

If you've ever watched the Star Wars movies, there are some obscure alien characters that can only be seen in the widescreen versions.

I am all gung ho for widescreen but I did stumble across this website.

Has anyone seen this? From what it looks like you aren't seeing everything even with widescreen?

Yeah, but you're seeing stuff that the director never intended you to see. I've seen sloppy jobs done with this type of fullscreen, and you see things like boom mikes.

Widescreen on a 36" tv, with the surround sound cranked.

Rocks!

'Cause Wider is better....

I can't stand to watch Full Screen flicks, especially those that use a poorly done "Pan and Scan" where the camera seems to slip back and forth too much on what ever is the item of focus at the moment. It gives me the willies....

Yeah me too. I was watching A Few Good Men on TNT last week and the whole movie has those pans. It's unwatchable.

try reading the label.

And it's all about the widescreen. I've even trained my gf to only look for WS when purchasing DVDs :)

try reading the label.

The label says Widescreen on one side and Full screen on the other. If you have it say Wide Screen facing down (toward the reader) it shows the movie in Full screen. Have to stop the movie, flip it over so the side that says Full Screen is down (toweard the reader), then its ok. The labels are backwards to what youd expect when you put it in. Hence the reason for the post. Regular DVDs that have only one side, say a label, you have the label up, right? Cause your playing the side that has the information on it.

your logic is flawed - whether single sided or double, the label up is the one you go by, in every case. Single side - label up - double side - if top says widescreen then it's widescreen.

Widescreen vs Fullscreen (http://img-nex.theonering.net/images/scrapbook/orig/8465_orig.jpg)

I was actually going to bring this up; often times films are filmed in fullscreen, and then later chopped for theatrical widescreen release, so they do chop off the bottoms of some of the films, so in those cases full screen is actually better - and I'm saying this as a widescreen advocate going way back.

Pan and scan...the worst! Some of those old 'scope' movies are unwatchable in pan and scan.

Actually, no. Remember old fashioned LP's? Side A was side A. This is completely the opposite. The reader reads the info on the bottom of the disk.

yes and no - yes the reader is on the opposite side, but no you dont need to think about that - much like lp's, cd's, dvd's, etc you put them in with the label you want side up.

Well, it's not really better, You might see more stuff on the top and bottom (including stuff you're not supposed to see, like the famous "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure's chain in the bicyle storage" gag or "Back to the Future Part II's Wires sticking out of his futuristic jacket" gag) but you're still missing stuff on the sides

this was linked earlier, It shows Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. You're still missing stuff on the sides while gaining extra stuff on the top and bottom (http://img-nex.theonering.net/images/scrapbook/orig/8465_orig.jpg)

The Movie Theater's screen is Wide. That's why Wider is better. I would think everyone would like to see the movie the way it was intended. Just buy a Widescreen TV and you'll hate FOOLSCREEN versions of films soon enough!

And SR, let's put it this way. Put the dvd in the tray. If the word "widescreen" staring up at you, you put it in the right way. If you see "fullscreen," flip it over.

Hey guys! (whispering) I have an idea: let's pretend we all really like full screen. We'll wait for some poor conformist rube to come in here and agree with us. Then will turn on the lights, pounce on him and give him a pink belly!

whenever i see something wide screen, it looks weird at first and then, about five minutes in, i completely don't even notice it anymore. so, i have no preference.

although i think wide screen might be the cool kids way to rock.

Widescreen is good. It makes it easier to read the sub-titles.
