So it was raised to orange today. Someone care to explain exactly why we have this system? I understand when they have some "chatter" they alert us when there is more than usual. But whats the point exactly? They tell us to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings. How bout being a little more specific. Is this warning just incase something does go down the government can just say "well we tried to warn you". This whole system seems like something that should be in an interoffice memo not broadcast on msnbc. There isn't much we as citizens can do with this information. Unless i see a muslim age ranging from 17-40 with bombs strapped to his chest running through the streets screaming to allah or something I would have no idea who is up to something.
And who's to say the "evildoers" know we're listening and have this ridiculous system in place and they up the "chatter" the week of christmas (probably the most traveled week of the year) to hurt the airline industry, thus the economy, while they don't have anything planned at all.
This is sick living like this. It's like we're just waiting to be attacked again.

well i do have an idea but it would be completely politically incorrect. and you said its there so we know whats going on. but my point is we DONT KNOW WHATS GOING ON. they give vague statements and a new color code. wow i'm glad i'm in the know.

Duct tape and plastic sheeting sales aside (you DO know those things go bad, don't ya?) there has obviously been an increase in the traffic over known Internet channels over the last week. I was hearing that a week ago over broadcast TV. Maybe you stupes don't have the neurons to realize that they were TRYING to tell you but you reacted with insufficient fear.

Or, now that your holiday shopping is done, it's no longer safe to go in the mall.

Whatever. Last time, the terrorists were clever and unarmed aside from box-cutters. This time, if anyone so much as gives me a sideways glance, I'm punching them in the throat.

WASHINGTON - The United States was thrown back into high alert for the holidays yesterday as the feds warned that terrorists may be planning attacks that "rival or exceed" 9/11.
The worrisome chatter intercepted by the nation's terror hunters is "perhaps greater now than at any point since Sept. 11, 2001," said Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

Worse, the fears involve the possible use of weapons of mass destruction, top U.S. sources have told the Daily News.

I think the alert means that it's ok to punch any raghead you see wearing a puffy jacket.

Also, that pregnant woman in the Burka may be carrying a bomb. Kick her in the stomach to make sure. If it is a bomb, you'll save us all and be a Martyr, 17 virgins, wine&grapes blah blah blah...
If it's not a bomb you'll be killing a future terrorist so it's a "win win". Better safe than sorry.

Years from now we will find out whether or not this ratcheting up and down of the threat level, and, by extension, our fears, was warranted or not.
After all, this is an administration that has been consistent in it's exaggerations in the "war" against terror.
We will know whether the all-encompassing term "chatter" really means anything at all.
After all, there has been increases in "chatter" before on several occasions and it has meant squadoosh.
And why don't they just go ahead and swoop in and grab or kill the "chatterers"?

In a way, yes. I'd rather have something solid as a result of the panic they cause.

Best Case: I'd like to have some details of a terror plot that was stopped as a result of the governments work.

All we have now is Vague threats: "Something bad's gonna happen. It'll make 9/11 look like a picnic. When? We don't know. Where? we don't know. Could be HUGE! Now go about your buisness. Merry Chirstmas!"

Or would everybody be happier if something did happen to justify the alerts so then you wouldn't have anything to say. Give me a break. Whats the big F'en deal if there are terror alerts? I think its a mild inconvenience for people to think about this. Or do you believe these threats no longer exist?

Given the weaknesses still being exposed in our "security" it's not much of a stretch to believe that professional terrorists could hit us and hit us hard in spite of the threat level being raised.
Plus, the Bush administration has already seriously damaged it's credibility with previous exaggerations and outright lying to the American people.

They are more and more resembling the little boy who cried "wolf" or Chicken Little.

Id really like it publicised that they caught some group in the act of a plot with bombs in their hands, only so we can say "See? They are doing something". Not that I have any doubt that they are hearing shit. They have raised the threat level a few times in the last year. If it keeps happeneing and nothing happens, eventually we will ignore it. Maybe the terrorists caused the earthquake!!

I guess we need a daily journal informing everyone of every contact and every covert activity that threatens terrorist activity so we can have a daily analysis of what is relavant and what isn't to "Prove" that a warning is necessary. It seems that is what alot of people need to justify this terrible system of "warning " people which is of course such a terrible thing. I mean a small group of underground, loosely organized people could never do such terrible damage that would warrant a general headsup, could it? I mean everyone knows, the Bush administration made this whole thing up. Maybe they knocked down the trade center as an excuse to continually lie about these threats that you all know don't really exist. You know, the way these guys were acting, you would think there was some friction out there among terrorist antiAmerican factions and general unrest against us. those silly republicans!
