if they are, nerdlinger, you're getting a virtual beat down.

the idea of e-books failed, sort of. you probably won't find full novels online - tangible objects are still preferred by people and are easier on the eyes.

I used to DL them off of Kazaa and open them in my Adobe Reader.

I did this for chronicles, this way i could DL about 4 or 5 books at a time into one file.

Real books are better though.

There's this place: Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.net/index.shtml)

or

Audible.com (http://www.audible.com) for audiobooks. <<These are good since NY radio both sucks and blows at the same time.

As Fester posted, Project Guttenberg takes books whose copyrights have expired and posts them on the net.

Are there any particular books or types of books you're looking for?

[De-Rail Mode = ON]

This ex-teacher will tell ya this for free. While books may or may not be available on-line, students sure think their Chemistry or Biology papers sure are there for the stealing.

Copy... paste ...copy ...paste...move... cut... ok reformat that... ok... done. My report on Yttrium.

Wow I passed of some reports I obviously had NO involvement in writing, but that was pre-internet, you had to actually, physically, COPY out of books!!

Sadly for them, Science text is pretty specific, and a few searches turn up the original text. Ever see a student deny, after you have asked them politely if they copied any of the paper; even told them, hey, just admit it and we forget this one, just don't look me in the eye and lie to me, and they still do, and then I show them the site they got it from.

Sigh...

Mike, kids are dum :)

Besides, always steal from multiple sources. Make the teacher work at it.

I know you are looking for a free ebook, but I have a great book to suggest. It is very long, and a little involved with math and computers, but it is a great story by a great author. It called cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.
Link for BN.com (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2TLSLR82AZ&isbn=0060512806&itm=4)

He also has many other great books and is the middle of writing a series.

Its like 8 dollars, but be warned, it is 1000 pages long. Very addictive.

Anything online is going to be more than 50 years old, so if you are looking for new stuff you are SOL. However, it did help me pass my "Images of the City in US Literature" course by being able to read Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie and F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. I brought them up on my work computer and read during the day. Boy, did everyone think I was working hard. Suckers.

See, I started reading Ayn Rands, Atlas Shrugged a few years ago and it was paperback, and man, it was like micro print! Id like to get the book in hardcover so I could actually read it without my eyes turning to ashes, the paperback I threw out after 2 chapters. Im sick and havent left the house for a few days and want something to read. Its so weird, I cant find ANYTHING interesting to look at on the internet! Imagine that?

Excellent novel. Although I found all of the WW2 sections of the book to be infinitely more interesting than the modern day portions.

I have to agree with you on that aspect. If you like the code breaking angle, try "The Code Book" by Simon Singh. It is non-fiction and takes you through a tour of crytography from the ancient cyphers of Ceasar through WWII and the enigma machine up to today and the future of quantum cryptography. Very good read. I have actually gone back and re-read many parts.

I have to agree with Se7en. I'm a huge Stephenson fan (Snow Crash is one of my absolute fave books) and am familiar with cryptography, stenography, et al., but I found the people far more interesting in the poast than their modern counterparts.

Wow I love that stuff. Have you read on Turing? Cherrynoid/Guttersnipe used the term Turing Test once and I swear I took a knee, thinking I was the only person who'd be 'nerd' enough to know about it. Guess it's not so nerdy. Hoffman's "Archimedes Revenge" has a great chapter on Codes, and The Beale Cipher specifically. Let's see how obscure that reference is...

Want a really weird twisted sick book that's online? Some is close to porn and it's chock full of death. Anyway the Blue Letter Bible website has an excellent online Bible. There are parts of the Bible that are so boring I can;t believe they still print those parts. But some of the stuff is so weird you just can;t stop reading. Go to Leviticus; that's where all the crazy rules are. Or go to Songs of Solomon and read all about sex. Or read Revelations. If anyone says they know what That LSD trip is about, they can tell me, coz I've talked to 90192 people and gotten 90192 different interpretations.

Ha! An agnostic goes Bible Thumping! Thump! Thump!

actually I did a project with Turing Tests. Next time you are on ticketmaster.com or sign up for an account somwhere and they ask you to type in the word that you see. That is considered a turing test. Well I am majoring in computer engineering, and one of our projects what to decipher the text from a computer perspective. Sort of beat the turing test. Very cool.

Is the Beale test the one with some prize or treasure? I remember reading about it in code breakers by David Kahn. I will research more on that later, but I have def. heard about it.

At the end of the above mentioned code book by singh were 10 questions that when answered he would pay 10,000 dollars.

I am going to start snowcrash over this christmas break. I have only heard good things about it.

Question - Is MizzleTizzle the real Mike the teacher. If so, didn't you another name before?

EDIT: Mizzle, after more research I do remember the Beale Cypher well. I know only part 2 has been solved, and 1 and 3 are still out there. I say we pool our brain power and solve that shit and split the bounty 50/50.

Who else has rambling 8 paragraph posts that fly off in a gazillion tangents? Just a name switch; sometimes having that 'teacher' in your name, or as a job title, sets off certain expectations of behavior. Plus how cool is having an R+F name that Ron and Fez made up on-air?

Simply, the 'teacher' part of me is tired of censoring itself. So PEACE!!!

I can't read a whole newspaper article online. I have to print it out. I can't imagine reading a whole book. And Printing it out can be expensive, might as well buy a paperback book.

i agree - how on earth can you read a entire novel on the computer screen?
Ever hear of a Library? Its this place where they give you FREE books for up to 3 weeks at a time!

on-line books cant be read in the can, on a subway etc..

Speaking of books - i havent read a novel in a looong time, what books are considered "must read" great books today? I need a good vacation novel.
