my brother is in the hospital recovering from an apendectamy, and my parents were telling me he had a catheter inserted. It just seems a little odd that he has this in him. Hes a healthy person who doesnt have incotinence. I know from having my appendix out that when I was in the hospital I just pissed right into one of those containers. can anybody explain why they would make him use a catheter?

It's so much more convenient. You just go when you gotta go.

I would ask the doc specifically why in your brother's case, but I suppose that after appendectomies some people simply have more trouble urinating than other people do (due to how the surgery acually went, differences in bodies etc etc etc) and that some people need a catheter to help them. Google appendectomy and catheter; it seems to be entirely normal to get a catheter after an appendectomy.

When my dumbass brother-in-law woke up from his appendectomy, he had to pee so bad that he actually ASKED for a catheter. All he knew was that it was some device that made you go. Imagine his shock when he found out how...

Since urine is sterile, just put the tube up the bung for a good douche.

It's because he's lazy. Tell him to get up and walk to the bowl like a real man.

It might not be this situation at all, but people get cathed after some surgeries so the MDs/RNs/etc can measure renal/kidney output. Important? You can live quite nicely with almost zero brain function, but if those kidneys shut down you got hours, max.
When my dad was real sick they couldn't cath him so, hey he's fucking dying, you stay up at his bed all night and help him wiz in the little thing and I write it on the chart.
Most surgeries with general anesthesia, or where they shut down your spine to numb out your lower body for any number of reasons, one of the side effects for some, is the shutting down of your excretory system, or as my RN mom says, "After you're in that surgery or on those pills Rush was on it's damn near impossible to take a crap."
After I had a surgery on my lower back which involved getting a needle in the spine, the nurse Made Me take a Shit and SHOW IT TO HER, to prove everything was working a-ok down there.
I was so proud. It was a nice crescent with a smooth taper. I'd forgotten about that Zagnut.
What does this have to do with pee? Fuck it I'm free associating.

After my buddy had treatment for kidneystones he damn near fainted when he saw the size of the catheter they took out of him. It hurt just to listen to him describe how they took it out.

Yeah, that's crazy. Does he have some kind of cat in his stomach with the chills? My roommate's cats like to sit in the sunny spots when they're cold.

Ouch.
My dad has brain cancer, and when he had to get a catheter put in, they had interns doing it. They fucked up by first missing the proper hole, then using a tube that was too big. Ouch. After the third miss, my old man dug his nails in the kid wanna be doc's chest and asked for an actual doctor.
