It does seem that whenever GW gets in hot water or some sort've situation is going on, that something generally positive always seems to pop up and push whatever issues that were going on to the back.
In the past few weeks we've seen...
Saddam captured
Libya destroying their WMD
and now the economy (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=6&u=/ap/20031223/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy) seems to be growing at a nice rate.
The fact that we've come pretty close on a few occaisions of recent to even nab (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3770221/) bin Laden.
Is he just very lucky, or actually a good president?
I know people will argue that not all of this positive news can be attributed to him, but generally by and large with these kinds of positive news events and the economy doing well the president always seems to get the credit for it.

Well, a cynic can always poke holes into any piece of good news from this President, as has been proven on here with Saddam ("Where's Osama?""Where are the WMDs?"), Libya (which actually have been making overtures since before 9/11, and only now has Bush used it for political reasons) and the economy on the rebound (still 3 million jobs lost; huge defecit; if he does have a second term, he won't be able to pay for anything), which was pretty much the case with Clinton when he had good news - everyone except the hard core haters could give him credit, and they created an industry trying to tear him down.
Personally, I've made no bones about it, I think he is a horrible president. I distrust him and his administration more than any other. But right now, I'm in that minority, because (idealogy aside) when people feel good at the moment, that will reflect nicely on the ones in charge.
Clinton and Reagan I believe were "Teflon." Bush just has the best people around him making some very smart decisions.

I think Bush is lucky to be president in an America where people are so blinded by grief and anger that they fail to ask questions and feel bound by patriotism to follow and accept.
The economy has always been cyclical, and the fact that it has recovered after a war is not really big news. However, I am more concerned with the deficit than easy fixes and with the sorry state of national defense. I am of course, in the minority.
Sadly, Bush will win re-election because the only other options suck even worse.

This is nothing new. Presidents always have ups and downs in the polls. Everybody predicted Reagen was a goner in 82 because of the recession and Clinton could never get reelected after losing congress in 1994. "W" is just going through the same shit they all do. In the end all that counts will be what happens in the few months preceeding the election.

It's a matter of cycles. The economy hit the skids, and its currently on the upswing. The president usually has little to do personally with trends in the economy. There are so many factors that weigh in when it comes to it- "consumer confidence", "business-centric laws", "fads/fashion", predictions, the stock market, etc.
I think that while Bush may not be a fantastic president, he has done some good things in his term. I certainly agree that pursuing Saddam and Bin Laden were necessary, no matter how unpopular that opinion may be. As for the WMD, I still don't think we're getting the full story, but I'm not ready to condemn the man about that just yet.

When a supporter of his looks at what Bush has actually done with the Farm Bill, Medicaid, immigration, interventionist foreign policy, expanding government, federal intrusiveness into the lives of law abiding citizens, education, uncontrolled government spending, just to name a few, Bush is unrecognizable as the man they elected.
Had he run on a platform that included these things, he would never have gotten their votes.
Bush has turned into the stereotype of a liberal that Limbaugh & co. have been bitching about for years. That they still support him speaks volumes about their "principles", or "core values" or whatever they're so sanctimoniously calling it this week.

I freely welcome people to have anti-Bush or anti-conservative opinions, and despite what you might think I can understand many of those opinions, but nothing is more ridiculous and assinine than copping a "everyone who supports Bush is a blind sheep" argument.

Silera posting:
I should say most people. Like the people that think Saddam was involved with the 9-11 attacks.
Those people.
Not all people. That's what I meant.
You're right. Nothing is more assinine than making blanket assumptions about an entire group of people. I try not to do that, and think I succeed most of the time.

The economy has always been cyclical
It's a matter of cycles...The president usually has little to do personally with trends in the economy...
Government policies have much to do with the economy.
Otherwise, I would like an explanation as to why the "cycle" of depressions in our economy has been stopped.
Wise trade policies and agreements like NAFTA and GATT, changes in minimum wage, reduction of government debt, balancing the budget, there is much the government can do to affect the economy.
Had Bush been smart, he would simply have copied The Clinton Model.
Instead, he gave us another Republican recession.
It's a tradition with them.
Cycles are fine on a bike path or on a washing machine, but to use "cycles" as an excuse for the failure of Bush's "Jobs and Economic Growth Plan is silly.
