As much as I dislike the Mideast, this death toll is shockingly high. Amazing how over here, we are so lucky we never have death tolls that reach anywhere near what happens in other countrys. I hope they pull through over there. (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031227/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iran_earthquake&cid=540&ncid=716) I also hope they interpret our likely aid as a sign of our goodness.

Its just amazing to me, I guess its the lack of technical sophistication in other areas, but when was the last time we had many thousands die like that? Even 9/11 didnt approach that #. Its sad that it comes to that. In India, a typhoon will hit and like 50,000 die! You never ever hear that here (Thank God!)

Of course, when I tried to watch CNN about it, they had wall to wall coverage about the mudslides instead, which killed 7 people I think. But, it's an America network, so...

There is no such thing as politics when it comes to the suffering of innocents. I remember the earthquake that hit Armenia in 1988 and how many people died despite Soviet technology. I think it just depends upon the intangibles rather than the locale. Ya have to feel and pray for those people.

See Ya!

The USA is sending help but there's little mention of that in the Iranian media. Maybe this is an opportunity for Bush to open up diplomatic relations with Iran.

The crust of the earth is broken into plates, which sit on top of a thick liquid mantle. Hot spots in the mantle cause the material in the mantle to move around below the crust. As the crust moves over these hot spots, depending on a number of things, the broken crust will do certain things. In California, if you look at the map and see the Baha peninsula, youll see that its tearing away from Mexico. This is where the Pacific plate meets with the North american plate. The pacific plate is moving north west while the north american plate is moving west. As the two plates bounce along their edges, the vibration and pressure causes earthquakes. Its actually very cool when you realise how much of a dynamic world we live on. Its this tectonic activity thats responsible for volcanic action that actually helped create the atmosphere.

Well the islamic government of Iran is refusing aid from israel. No big surprise there. Iran would rather see its own citizens die than get help from a Jewish nation.

The earthquake should have been in Tehran specifically only around the govt buildings

Pity that it didn't happen around their nuclear facilities.
