As in 'visions of sugar plums danced in thier head'...so what are they? I've looked up on the internet and I can't make heads or tails of it. Do they actually exist?

I think it's plums stored in sugar.

Sugarplums have been around since at least the 16th century in England. Here are some definitions of a sugarplum: sugarcoated coriander; a small, round piece of sugary candy; plums preserved in sugar; a small confection, often consisting of fruit such as dried plums, cherries, or apricots.
In any case, these days sugarplums are usually dried fruit (I think not plums but more often cherries) that are coated in fondant (which is mostly sugar that's been worked to be almost claylike)
