SCTV was great because you felt like you were part of some secret society, almost a cult. While SNL got all the press attention and notoriety, those in the know all agreed that SCTV was not only funnier, but downright brilliant. (Hmm, remind anyone of anything else?)

I was able to see for most of these shows on tape, although I wasn't a teenager in their golden years. The arrogant Dave Thomas ( no, not Wendy's father) has a paragraph in his SCTV book on this subject. I think it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. There are pros and cons to live vs. tape. As great as the SCTV people were, I like the 1st 3 years of SNL better.

i dunno SCTV was pretty damn good...John Candy is one of the funniest men ever...BUT...SNL has lasted through time...and it has always been my dream to be on it either as a guest or an actual cast memeber

Overall, SCTV was far superior
to SNL but SNL had its
moments-- Will Ferrel's Janet
Reno, Mike Myers' Wayne's World.

Canadians have a better sense
of humor. There must be
something in the water!!

SNL with Belushi, Murray et al. was superb. The tripe they are producing for the last couple of years needs to be put out with the trash. SCTV, on the other hand, has always tickled my funny bone!

I like SNL better. I didn't grow up with SCTV, I only saw it a couple times after Conan was on this summer. SCTV is funny, but I prefer SNL.

Why do I have to choose? May I please have both?

My favorite SCTV sketch was John Candy as Tattoo from Fantasy Island. He'd say "Zee plane, zee plane, are there chicks on zee plane?" Towards the end of the sketch he ticked off Boss because he destroyed a guest's cello when he was humping it (because it looked like a chick.)

True, this is like comparing apples and oranges, but Edith Prickley ( ha, snort!), Lola Heatherton( "I Wanna HAVE YOUR BAY-BEEE..HA HA HA HA ha"), and Sammy Maudlin....I love SNL(especially the last few years with Will Ferrell, Darryl Hammond, Cheri Oteri-although she's gone now, and obviously the Gilda Radner/ John Belushi first few years) however SCTV is damn classic ('These are the days of the week...') As for Canadians being funny and that there could be something in the water??? ( I'm Canadian, but sorry, guys-I can't share the H20 secret. I COULD tell you, but then I'd have to kill your dog.

All canadians are funny, except my radio show cohost canadian bryan...I will inform him of this thread, and maybe he will reply...i prefered SNL during the 1985-1993 years with Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, David Spade, Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, and Victoria Jackson years...and of cojurse the legendary Phil Hartman.

how aboot..err..ummm.. about Canadian Bacon when Americans begin to get paranoid about all the Canadians in the U.S.? "The Canadians walk amoung us!" And they started to list all of the Canadians in show biz. Most of the good actors were on that list. it surprised me.
