Some people are now comparing him to Micheal Jackson...

BRISBANE, Australia (Jan. 2) - ''Crocodile hunter'' Steve Irwin's honeymoon with the Australian public could well be over.

The television star and likely candidate for Australian of the Year honors was being compared to disgraced pop star Michael Jackson on Saturday, after he took his month-old son to his first crocodile feeding, a moment that was captured by television cameras and later broadcast.

Before a crowd of onlookers Irwin held his son Robert under one arm and dangled a piece of meat from the other in front of a 13-foot crocodile which quickly snapped up the offering.

''Good boy Bob,'' Irwin said once the crocodile's jaws snapped shut, the tabloid Herald Sun reported.

Viewers jammed phone lines at Channel 7 and Channel Ten, the two networks that broadcast the footage, expressing their outrage at Irwin's actions, news reports said.

The stunt drew comparisons with Michael Jackson dangling his baby son over a hotel balcony in Berlin in Nov. 2002.

But Irwin defended his actions, saying his child was never in danger.

''I was in complete control of the crocodile. Robert was tucked right in my arm,'' said Irwin, the Herald Sun reported on Saturday.

His American wife Terri, who handed the baby over to Irwin in the enclosure and giggled at the spectacle, agreed.

''It was a wonderful sensory experience for him (the baby). He dug it,'' she said.

Child support and family groups said Irwin's behavior was almost like child abuse and he should never have exposed his son to such peril.

''Most parents would cringe at the sight of such things,'' said Bill Muehlenberg from the Australian Family Association, quoted in the Herald Sun.

''One slip, one fall and he is the crocodile's lunch.''

Actually, i've really got no problem with Irwin's actions. The kid is a little young, but Irwin's been around crocodiles his whole life and if anyone knows what they are doing around them, its him...its totally not like the Jackson thing...

I have a big problem with his actions.

The first point about Irwin being around Crocs his whole life. Agreed. But so were Sigfried and Roy, and one of them nearly had his throat torn out. The more I read of it the more I am amazed he lived.

Meaning; expertise is great, but the Croc has a brain that's so rudimentary; a stem, a limbic system and r-complex, but thats about it i think. So I don't know if that's an asset or liability with them in terms of behavior and training. It maybe know symbiotic relations, but also that baby may have looked mighty tasty, in a Fat Bastard kinda way...

But I'd err on the side of caution, if for no other reason is someplace, sometime, somewhere, we're gonna hear about some ass who did something similar, completely innocent, 'hey I just dangled the kid for a second!'...' it wasnt a croc it was just that rabid pit bull...' who knows, weirder shit has happened...

I don't know...in a way i'd agree that he DOES know what he's doing from doing it for so many years in his life, but if you really think of it, one small slip, trip, whatever, and it's over!! Crocodiles are so damned fast and don't care whats in front of them; they'll eat it in a quickness and that's something that shouldn't happen to a great man like him. Again; all it takes is a second and it's over, crocs show no mercy. Steve-O should know better.

I can't believe no one has gone for the obvious-- quoting "Amos Moses" by Jerry Reed.

Old schoolers will recall that when he was a kid, Amos Moses' pappy "...used him for alligator bait"

there's no room for debate here. What he did was fucking insane.... I always knew he was insane, but to me dangling your kid in one hand in front of a hungry crocodile while dangling a piece of meat in another is tantamount to abuse....that kid should be taken away from him in my opinion...

Who the FUCK uses thier baby as part of thier crocodile act????? In this country he'd be put in jail....

Does Michael Jackson have a lifetime of experience dangling people from balconies? Unless he's spent quality time with Shug Knight that I don't know about, the answer is no.

Irwin, on the other hand, is an expert in his field and I trust his judgement in handling animals and the way he handles them around his own kids.

Irwin could easily have slipped on the corner of the stage or been blinded by photographer's flashbulbs, or the croc could have simply gotten tired of being made to look silly and gone bonkers...

Irwin needs to have his hand held in a toaster.

I'm REALLY pissed, because after all, this is the guy who, after cavorting with both, came down on my side and said a 25 foot croc could beat a 25 foot shark in a fair fight.

asshole.

Let's assume it's your kid. Not the person above specifically, but let's say you have a kid. Siegfried and Roy were working with tigers, now I'm guessing here, as long as, if not waaaay longer then this guy. Would you allow Siegfried, or Roy, to take your newborn and repeat this with a tiger?

There are many experts in many fields, and some live to be nice and old, and some like to flirt with danger, but usually these two don't mesh well, IMHO.

Uber space-nerd that I am, there's a chapter in Wolfe's 'The Right Stuff' about a Navy Pilots odds. Meaning, if you made it your life, you career; getting inside giant chucks of steel which take off, and fly them around, and land them. Over and over, for years. I will get the numbers when I go grab the book, but they were absolutely horrific. The point is, despite the millions of dollars and hours that go into the design and care of these things, the odds are very good that at some point, enough unknowns occur, and now the Pilot is, despite all of the experts upon experts, at the Mercy of Mother Nature, hurtling to earth in a now dead or damaged jet.

Maybe a bad analogy, but there's a quote I use a lot when writing about technology and our complete dismissing of it until it fails, or, like Siegfried and Roy, when an animal is about:

Reality must take precedence over Public Relations, because Nature cannot be Fooled.

-Richard Feynman; Shuttle Challenger Disaster report.

The croc could have swung its head at his legs and knocked him down and the baby could have fallen out of his arms. Im sure he doesnt do it regularly, and maybe he was looking for attention or publicity. Its not like anything can be done anyway, but I just feel that it was a risk youd think he would know better, but the guy is known as a clown with animals and makes his living doing risky things, but its usually just HIS risk, this baby has no choice, and the mom seems like an air head. Maybe its Natural Selection at work we are witnessing.

Maybe a bad analogy

It's a bad analogy for two reasons. 1) It isn't my kid, it's Irwin's kid. 2) Siegfried and Roy are not tiger experts, they are magicians who happen to own a tiger.

It would have been cool if the crocodile ate Steve Irwin's leg and he needed an immediate leg transplant so his baby donated his leg to Steve. Then Steve would have one adult leg and one baby leg. That would have been awesome!

Love Of The Common Man

I've been burned in my prime
The simple things in life
Seem so hard to learn sometimes
And it takes so long
Catch it while you can
Too late tomorrow
And everyone

Said we all know what comes of that
Living in your pockets and talking through your hat
But it won't take long
To turn your head around
Too late tomorrow
'Cause everyone needs the love of the common man
Turn the world around
Too late tomorrow
'Cause everyone

Everyone is waiting, just anticipating on you
Won't you make a showing everybody knows what to do
Take a dive from your ivory tower
And fall on everyone will catch you, everyone

I would be so pleased to spend some time
To hear a little talk about what's been on your mind
'Cause it don't take long
To turn my head around
If it comes easy
'Cause everyone needs the love of the common man
Turn the world around
Too late tomorrow
'Cause everyone
