I got this thing for X-mas, basically the only thing I really got. But its great. I have some 300+ Cd's and i hated carrying them around on trips and leaving them in my car. Then i hated buying batteries for my CD player and I have have 3 cd players lasers burn out. So I needed something else.
20GB, thats more than the computer im using now has on it.
Rechargeable Battery, thank fucking god
Massive amount of songs can be put on it, over 15,000 i believe maybe more.
And You dont have to download from Itunes, you can still use Kazaa and soul seek just you have to see if the quality is very good, cause mp3's can be pretty shitty.
I reccommend it if you've got 400 bucks spare, but it so worth it.

Its a little bulkier than the Ipod, but I'm willing to risk it in order to have that much room.

$50, and that's every year and a half if the 18 month claim is actually true. Totally worth it to me if it means I don't deal with the hassle of stupid AA or whatever batteries, losing them, charging them, forgetting them places blah blah blah.
I use pod access to get muysic off my ipod, seems to work ok. I don't really take music off of it so it doesn't matter much to me. I'm sure there are better pograms out there.

Does anyone know of a good freeware utility for Windows that will let you add contacts to your iPod?
I've seen a few on various websites but they all require .NET Framework be installed on my PC, though I'd rather not have to install that. I checked out one of the links that JustJon listed above and there was one called bPod that seemed to do it and it was Flash based but the link to download it doesn't seem to work. If anyone knows of a good alternative let me know. Thanks

I'd like to get one of these, but they're so darn expensive. My sister promised me to get an upgraded version of another mp3 player, the irock.
The irock I have (irock 530), is basically on it's dying days after almost two years of being dropped on the floor, and even one time into a puddle on the street. This little trooper was only 128 mb, but it still kept me from insanity as I shut out the moronic chatter I heard on the bus and train. Now my sister promised to get me the irock 860 which is a bit bigger, and features a black light, holds 256mb, has an FM tuner, and a carrying case (good chance I won't drop this one as much). I'll be content with the 860 (considering my sister makes good on her promise), but if I had a job I'd get the 10gb iPod as it'll hold more songs than I can listen to on my rides to and from school.

beautiful. unlike the earbuds, the in-ear goes right up to the ear canal. Plus the soft rubber blocks out noise and makes them quite comfortable.
As an added bonus, it comes in a plastic carrycase that can be used to avoid tangles and 3 pairs of soft rubber ear pieces (small, medium and large ones).
Well worth the $40.

Technically I don't think putting any kind of speaker right next to your ear is "good for you". But as long as it doesn't ram into your ear drum and isn't too loud, it should be fine. It doesn't look long enought to touch the ear drum.
Will Apple start shipping the new earphones with the ipods or is it just to be an accessory

It's not right up to the ear drum, it stops short of where the canal starts. And you don't have to turn the iPod up very loud to hear it.
The new earphones come with the iPod minis. As for any future models, who knows?

Although Apple's newest headphones beat the original Apple phones for sealing in the sound and cutting out distracting ambient noise, they unfortunately don't quite match the state-of-grace of others. For some reason, the Apple buds seem to have been designed to slip out of your ears. Instead of nestling firmly in your ear canal, the matte-finish slippery silicone(?) interchangeable earpiece-inserts slope so that they gradually slide out
Here's the review (http://www.ipodlounge.com/reviews_more.php?id=2720_0_6_0_M) I had read about where the guy said they fell out. I'm still going to get them, but I was curious if you've noticed the same things as this guy.

My thoughts after reading the review:
1) the reviewer doesn't get laid much because he's a geek with poor grooming habits.
2) my headphones are about a week old and don't slip like his did. I'll admit they'll occassioanlly shift in my ear, but that's more from me moving my head and the wire pulling on them.
3) I wasn't listening to bass heavy music, but the things I did listen to sounded fine.
4) the reviewer is gay. he listens to Madonna.

I'm going to be picking up the 20gb iPod within the next week or two. On Best Buy's website they say that the 20gb holds up to like 5000 songs. I thought there was more on a 20gb model.
Also, I heard there isnt a bass boost option on the ipod's. Does that bother anyone else as much as it bothers me?
And is the fact that I have a Windows PC going to cause any "problems" or inconviences with my iPod experience?

Nahhh; its the original .wav files of the songs converted from my collection, or original electronic music. MP3 quantization errors, even at high conversion rates, leave a lot to be desired for some applications, especially music with a lot of transients, and thats some of my stuff. And recording at 24bit/44.1 or 48 kHz eats up memory at an astonishing rate.

XPlay. It's what I used before I had a mac laptop (and before there was Windows iTunes). It basically treats the iPod as another hard drive and you manage the music through Windows Explorer.

it's a shame how expensive the mini-pod is for only four gigs ... you really don't need more than a couple gig of music on your prson at any given time, a 60 gig ipod would allow you to carry around 15,000 to 20,000 songs -- that's just obscene ...
i just hooked up my friend's mini-ipod with 612 songs, filling it just half way ... at what point do we saturate our sensibilities with an overabundance of selection ...
they are a damn sexy piece of machinary, great aesthetics ...

in terms of memory used/needed for music, a lot of it depends on how you have it. The standard format for saving sounds on computers before the MPEG showed up was the wav file.
An uncompressed wav file eats memory at the rate of 1.4MBs for ever Second of music. Thats 14MB every ten seconds.
Remember thats uncompressed recording. Meaning it's recording everything, including stuff well beyong the 'normal' human range of hearing.
Which is exactly what the MP3 compression algorithm does. It takes out the inaudible, then does the data compression.
The arguement is for the audiophiles, as to what qualifies as 'inaudible.' A high quality MP3; anything at 128kHz or above, can be indistinguishable to most. But A/B-ing a 128kHz MP3 and the uncompressed original using some good equipment, and you'll notice the compression. But hey, for most uses, thats just fine. You save a factor of what, 12? I forget the rates, but they pop-up everytime I save something on my system; Sonic Foundry Sound Forge; its like what they use at most radio stations; Cool Edit Pro, but for the musician.
And some digital recorders record at a sampling rate of 44 or 96 kHz, and thats a 24-bit sample. Multiply that by whatever someone might be recording with, 8, 12, 24 tracks or more, and the memory requirements just explode.
Of course, you can go analog and buy some 2 inch tape...

good rule of thumb for a lot of mp3 music out there that you may get from "less than reputable sources" is a meg a min, or 60 megs and hour, so a 60Gb Ipod would be 1000 hours of music.
My cd player that does cdrw holds 600 ish megs, or 10 hours of music (more for certain radio shows cough cough)

Bill damn yer good.
I just looked at an MP3 of Mine.
At 128kHz Sampling;
5 min 18 seconds of music = 4.80 MB
A Meg a minute; nice rule of thumb.
And I was just listening to same after burning to CD and bringing to a fairly good stereo. There'a a difference, but its subtle. The MPEG people really have quite an algoritm. Thats a pretty amazing factor of compression, given the before and after.
There is a producer out there who goes by the name Machine; i think he did one of the last Tool albums, and he did a King Crimson album I listen to. They use analog 2 inch tape, but at some Redicululously fast transport speed, something like 4 or 6 FEET per second. I cant imagine what the equivalent bitstream would have to be. But some guy swear by analog tape in the studio still.

i'm glad this has come up ...
i have (for the last three years) ripped all my mp3s at 112khz and it sounds great to me and also saves a bit more space ... i had ripped my first hundred at 160 and the tinny, white noise was painful ...
in the world of concert trading, there seems to be a cult of sheer orthodoxy concerning lossless files and an utter disdain for the bastard mp3 files ...
using regular speakers, cd players -- your average hookup -- how noticable are the two extremes ..?
is it just another overthought purist debate ..?

For mp3 quality, you never want to drop below 128kbs. If you were getting white noise with 160kbs, you might have been doing something wrong when ripping it.

The iTrip works amazingly well.

I like that it doesn't require batteries like the one that Belkin makes. Also the Belkin FM modulator seemed to lose it clarity after about a month or so. I switched to the iTrip and have barely had any problems with it since and it's crystal clear throgh the radio. I set my frequency to 106.4 which works very well.

I have been hearing a LOT about the iPod and I gather it is some kind of MP3 player and it loooks like I could download all of my CD's onto it. The question is, I read something above about an AM Transmitter? If this is the case can it get me some good AM reception?
I would love to be able to tune in some far out of range Sports Stations for when I am on the road. I lose WIP out of Philly when I hit Maryland (South I-95) and right about when I hit the I-287 - I-78 JCT in Jersey. I know some stations do carry pretty far as I was able to get Red Sox games via WEEI in Connecticut and can get 940 News out of Montreal. I was always amazed at how far some stations did carry and would love to get some Cinncinati and Green Bay stations to hear their football talk during the season.
I am however still holding out hope that one of the Satellite Radio companies will start to carry Regional Stations (WIP, WFAN, etc.) and make them be able to be heard nationwide. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Ok here goes...........I've been quite ignorant in reading this thread. With that said, I have a couple of questions. I'm getting an iPod for Christmas, the 20gb one. Here's my question: I'm a huge fan of "jam band/hippie" type music. One amazing thing about thier online community is the extensive amount of live shows available on-line. I get 90% of my music from live shows that I download through Bit Torrent. The only thing I really want to do with my iPod is put my shows on there, they really are the only form of music I listen to. So, how does one transfer live shows, from Bit Torrent, onto their iPod?

HHH are these live shows in mp3 format?
If so, you can drag the files right into the iTunes software which puts them into the iPod.

You worded that wrong. Bittorrent is just an app that you use to download files. Once they are downloaded they are on your hard drive in some folder some where like every other file and bittorrent is out of the picture.
Are they in mp3 format?
If yes then you just put them on via iTunes or whatever iPod file manager you choose.
If no then you need to convert them to mp3 and then see above.

Get this (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/)
and this plugin (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-shorten.htm)
And then use the built-in stuff to go to mp3.
Seems like a lot of work though..

Just plug iPod shuffle into your computer's USB port, let iTunes Autofill it with up to 240 songs(1) and get a new experience with every connection. The trail you run every day looks different with an iPod shuffle. Daily gridlock feels less mundane when you don't know what song will play next. iPod shuffle adds musical spontaneity to your life. It's obviously not for everyone LJ. For the folks who want more then there's the iPod or iPod mini.
Apple is clearly trying to cover the low end and high end mp3 player market with offerings.
I wouldn't be surprised if a mid range product with a screen doesn't come out before year end as well that is similar to this.

Yep. The only differences are that this is $99, has no display, and holds far fewer songs than a standard iPod. This thing was designed to appeal to people looking for a mp3 player but don't want to pay the iPod prices. All iPods as far as I know have the shuffle feature.

I saw an iPod thread, and had to add my 2 cents about the thing.
This thing is amazing. It's changed the way I listen to my music, put it all in one place, and made listening to music convenient.
I have the 20 Gig U2 edition one. I would have never been able to afford it, but my aunt got it for me.
I take the iPod with me EVERYWHERE now. So that means I'm NEVER without the music I love. It's unbelievable. It's really like I have a soundtrack to my everyday life. Plus, I put O&A bits on there too. Vos' CD. Death Metal. Metal. Hard Alternative. Pop. Dance. Industrial. YOU NAME IT. I would have existed without this thing, but my life is so much better with it.
