ok so for years now this guy denied he bet on baseball, and now in his new book he says he DID bet on baseball.
Whether he did or didn't shouldn't matter if he gets into the hall of fame. After all he would have been inducted on his merits as a player not a manager. It just seems to me he is willing to admit he did this just to get reinstated.
Can we just stop already? We all know he gambled on baseball, who cares, he didn't hurt anyone but himself.
There are guys already in the hall of fame that have done alot worse. Hell Ty Cobb the first guy inducted beat the shit out of some guy in the stands that didn't have any arms.
I just think it's kind of a shame that they are making him come out and confess to this, its just very uncomfortable. Let it go already.

I have no problem whatsoever if all he did was bet on his teams to win and betting on the opposing team to lose, but if he ONCE bet on his team to lose then he deserves to be banned forever.

Good point, but hes not going into the Hall of Fame as a manager but as a player and I dont think that because he might have mismanaged games on purpose in order to make himself money should reflect on his achievments as a player. The guy after all is one of the greatest hitters in the history of the MLB.

And didnt Bud Selig say that if Rose admitted that he gambled he would let him back into baseball? Should this count as him admitting it?

First of all, the idea that if he didn't bet on his team to lose it's okay is absurd. Let's say he was in the hole, I dunno, a hundred grand to some sleazy characters, and could cut down some of that debt and/or save his kneecaps by having his team take a dive, he didn't have to bet on them to lose yet he still sold out the game.

I may have said this before, but it's worth saying again. Players can take steroids, players can wear stickum, pitchers can file, sand, or spit on the ball, players can have ten different illegitmate children, players can take drugs, players can be involved in murder, armed robbery or rape trials, none of these are as bad to the sport as gambling. Gambling is THE one unforgivable crime in all of sports, the only cardinal sin.

The entire sports world, every single professional or amateur sport in the world, spins on the axis of one single, solitary point: The outcomes of the contests are not pre-determined. If any doubt whatsoever is brought to that in the mind of the public, the sport is done for, it's the WWF. This is more inportant than any other factor. That's why "Shoeless" Joe is banned for life, and that's why Rose should be banned for life as well, regardless of how good he was. He must be made an example of.

Joe Jackson was banned because he signed a confession, not because he threw the game. After all the guy was illeterate and had no idea what he was signing. for the 1919 world series he had a .375 average with a .394 obp. those numbers don't seem like someone that was trying to throw the game.

Back in the day, I was a Reds fan, loved the Big Red Machine.

Rose got to be the hit king with as pathetic a display of grasping that you'll ever see; desperately hanging on as a "player-coach" who would put himself in a game against a tired or less talented pitcher just to pump up his own stats.

What Rose did isn't any less horrible just because he admits it.

Look, the sonofabitch is not just admitting to double parking!

And I don't believe he suddenly decided to come clean "for the good of the game" or some such shit.

I'm looking forward to him giving one of those "if any one was offended" apologies.
He needs to not only apologize for betting on baseball, but also for lying about the depth of his gambling problem and his personal attacks on those who correctly accused him all these years.

I do not believe Selig said he could get in the hall if Rose admitted to betting on baseball. I think it was more like they would reconsider lifting some or all of the ban on him.

Looking at the way he has shamelessly marketed himself, the nickname "Charlie Hustle" seems quite apt.

Right, if he did bet as a manager and it was against his own team (assuming he did) then by his actions, he had the ability to prevent someone ELSE from getting into the Hall of Fame, and for that potential, he SHOULDNT be inducted. He knew the deal.

It says on every clubhouse door in baseball (in english and spanish) that NO ONE can take money or bet on baseball in anyway. Period.

This "i was lying before but now i'm telling the truth".

However, baseball is a fan's game...and a lot of fans think he should be in the Hall of Fame.

People have been debated this for almost 20 years. This is what I think should put this to bed.

1 - Let him in the Hall. Give him a day. Baseball will get some good press (and some bad). He's in the Hall of Fame before he dies. His stats warrant that, although entry to the hall of fame includes stats as well as adding "character" to the game...but whatever.

2- HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO WEAR A BASEBALL UNIFORM AGAIN. No big time manager job which is honestly what I think he wants more than anything...because money is all he cares about apparently. He wants a 2 or 3 year deal for several million dollars to be a manager. Fuck him. HE BET ON BASEBALL!

3- No cushy annoucner job on Fox for baseball. try again asshole.

4-if he wants to be "closer to the game" say he can coach and manage in the minor leagues to his heart's content. no one beats on minor league baseball.

you know why he used to slide into bases head first? so he wouldn't break crack viles in his back pocket.
