SPACE IS OURS FOR THE PLUNDERING! (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/03/mars.rovers/index.html)

The news sources are a little behind the TV media. Signal was confirmed, and for now it is there and working.

SCORE, US.

I will spare you folks the 1,290 words I have to parse down for submission to the papers, the papers.

But I live for this stuff. If the cameras work as advertised, we're up for some stunning panoramas of wherever the hell it landed. And with luck, the Spirit rover will cruise around and dig the soil and check it out.

Sending people up in a shuttle or a space station isn't space exporation. Space exploration is this; going to other Worlds.

Eat that China, with your man in orbit 40 years late, and Europe, with your dead Beagle.

And can the first person to walk on Mars please be a chick?

You know what depresses me?

All the space wreckage left on the moon and Mars from the past 30 years. Not just the ships that successfully landed... I'm just thinking about the gigantic crater that Beagle 2 left.

No, it can't be a woman. if you let them be the first person on mars, the next thing they'll want is the right to vote, or wear pants.
