View Full Version : The BCS sucks so there should be college playoffs

The main reason BCS rankings was to try and keep from any more controversy over the "who is #1 in the college polls after all the bowl games".
Well Let's see....LSU beats Oklahoma and USC kicked the crap out of (sob) Michigan and they have to split the title?
The AP polls came out and named USC #1 however LSU was had won the Sugar Bowl to claim the title of #1.
STOP THE INSANITY!
Several Weeks ago...Ohio State had won a game by a thread and USC killed their opponants however Ohio State still got the #1 ranking a week later. WHY? Because the BCS computer said so.
For whatever reason college football does NOT want to give the fans a Championship game. Who knows why. Is it because it is in direct compitition against the NFL playoffs?
The BCS was supposedlly created to keep the a Championship nesseccary.
The blew it.
I saw an ad in Sports Ill. for Nike.
It had the Two teams set up from the rose bowl and the two set up from the Sugar Bowl.
It had both winners playing each other on Jan. 10th for the College Championship. It was JUST an advertisement.
But it is a great idea.
COME ON NCAA!!! Get with the program!

Bowie, Md.: Berkeley, I'm so glad you're back!; I've really missed The Far Side all these years.

Berkeley Breathed: Yes, thank you, but I don't draw Far Side. I draw Calvin and Hobbes.

It should be the top 4 teams in the country playing in a playoff. How hard is that? No more teams are necessary because anyone under the top 4 does not deserve a shot.

It works in the pros. Why not in college as well?

The excuse is always exams, vacation, holiday plans, etc. But if this year's outcome doesn't make them push ahead with at least a 4-team playoff, it'll never happen. What a mess.

There will never ever ever be any end to the bitching, no matter what system is used.
There are too many teams for any kind of tournament or playoffs that will be fair to everyone.
The playoffs I've seen proposed include a small number of teams. If adopted, there would always be someone bitching for not being in the playoffs.

Fuck it.

Just enjoy the games and let that be it.

It should be the top 4 teams. If you are ranked 5th or worse , you are there for a reason.

But what if the top 5 teams are all 11-1 ?
How can you say one dserves to be left out.
Playoff isnt the answer.
As far as an additional bowl game goes, I dont think it makes sense. Sure it would've this year, but as Stoops said the other day, when they went 13-0 a few years ago should they have had to played another game to go 14-0 to win the title ?
Of course not.
Firstly I think all conference should have to play a title game. If the conferences that are too small, like the Big East and PAC10, cant play a title game, they should have to play each other. At that point you can take the winners of those games and have a "playoff".
On a side not I'm getting tired of Ivan Maisel on ESPN.com.
I had to correct him for the 2nd time this year on one of his articles.
He wrote in a column today that LSU and USC only played one common opponent ( Auburn ), when in fact they both played Arizona as well.
I mean I know its not a big deal, but this is the dudes career, at least proofread something.
Geez.

just leave it how it is and everyone just realize that no matter what happens, someone is gonna be pissed.

they even came up with a playoff game for the last spot in the NCAA tournament cause so many teams were pissed they didnt make it. its a fuckin crock. no one will ever except it. like JIM said, wont that 5th team be pissed.

The only way to possibly do it is this:
take the consensus top 25, just to appease them all, and put them up on NCAA.com.
everyone goes there as soon as the regular season is done and votes for the team they think should be the number one team.
whichever 2 teams get the most votes FROM THE FANS get to play for the national championship, and then keep the rest of the bowls the same

One other thing they should've added is that the team that is #1 in either " human " poll should get bonus points at the end.
I think the quality wins needs to re-addressed. Finishing #1 in a poll should be worth more points that beating a weak ( no matter where they were ranked ) Texas team.
Those points copuld have kept a highly over-rated Oklahoma team out of the title game.
I went to LSU, and even I think that USC got cheated. I think USC might have beaten LSU by 30 points. That would've been a good game to see.

agreed

how about this sportwriter from cnn/sportsillustrated. he says that he would rather be Oklahoma instead of USC or LSU because they don't have to question "who is really #1"

what the F ??????

do you think if he asked any USC or LSU player 'where they would prefer to be' that they'd say in Oklahomas position?...

just don't make sense to me

Did you see that 3 coaches voted for USC in that poll even though they were " supposed " to vote for LSU ?
Any idea who they were ?
I think they publish the names somewhere.

Probably Not. And Crippler is indeed correct; it's about fitting those extra games into an academic year. Whether or not the players give a shit or not about school; the NCAA is watched so the schools are watched to make sure these guys are at least putting up appearences.

This is where I changed my position on the NCAA. Either just pay these guys outright, or distance the leauge from the schools so what needs to be done can. Even as a teacher, I gotta admit education is a distant second with many of these guys. Getting paid is first. I used to think the guys going directly Pro while very young was wrong, now I say; look, if he's that good now, give him a shot at the Big Money. If he succeeds, great. If his knee gets blown out, he can go back and give the get-rich by college route.

But some folks in the industry gotta stop pretending about some of these programs and the pay-offs. The fact that the ones that get caught do get caught shows how much is going on, and suggests a shitload more goes on that we never find out about. It's just too easy to hand someone a thick envolpe; ditto with saying no to it.

I don't have a whole lot of sports experience; but I went to Villanova when it was Rollie and the boys beat Ewing and Georgetown for the greatest final i'll ever see. And at that school; it was right out of that movie 'Blue Chips' with some of those guys. I dont mean I know they were getting paid, but they were treated like royalty.

This assumes someone watches the finances, so that Mr. $20M a year doesn't become utterly broke, which seems to be the rule in some sports [boxing].

No, LSU got 60 1st place and USC got 3 in the ESPN/USA Today poll thats tied to the BCS game :

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankings

USC got 48 1st place and LSU 17 in the AP poll.
USC picked up 6 from the previous week and LSU lost 4 ( USC 42/LSU 21/OK 2 ).
