This is only interesting to me - sorry. So, I'm bored at work, and I start looking up information on random shit, when I come across the information on the punk band CLETUS and the lead singer "Johnny Puke" and I realize - he and I use to go to school together!!

We were in the same group of people until he left and a few years later, the last time I saw him, he had just started calling himself "Johnny Puke" for the zine he was working on. This was back in 1988, I believe, and it was at a waffle shop in North Carolina where I went to college - both of us were there to interview Jello Biafra, who smelled like ass. Anyway, very odd - I guess he's the most famous person I went to school with.

You went to college in a waffle shop? Man, you got taken.

I used to accidentally get mail addressed to Ian Mackaye at the Dischord Records address when I lived in Glover Park.

This is only interesting to me - sorry.
Then why are you posting it in a public forum? :)

oh, and Jodie Foster, who was already famous when I met her, and was a bitch, but that's still another story.
And I'm still waiting to hear this story, as promised months ago in another thread.

Was she upset that you wouldn't kill the president for her?

some emo band

I keep hearing that term "emo" tossed around. Can someone explain what it means to this old man?

It's just barely on the fringe of mainstream music. I don't really like much of it, but At The Drive In was a guilty pleasure. They had a song a couple of years ago called One Armed Scissor that was very cool (and very different at the time). Then they broke up. But most of it gets very whiny and you throw in the piano, the sweaters, the birth control glasses--it's just not good.

I see where Husker Du is considered an influence, and Fugazzi gets a lot of credit/blame - is Weezer emo?

I wouldn't consider them emo. Doesn't mean I like them. They seem more pop-punk or even pop-grunge to me.

How did a nice thread about Johhny Puke turn into a thread about emo?

Maybe the nicest thing anyone ever said to me here... How did a nice thread about Johhny Puke turn into a thread about emo?
I believe when I mentioned that he was the tour manager for an emo band during Warp Tour - Alkaline Trio. John was a grade ahead of me. It was very odd, then, running into him 6 years later at college (Waffle Shop University), also in NC - it took us a couple of minutes to make the connection of where we knew each other from. It was fun, but Jello was a dick. Afterwards John and I kept in touch for awhile, but then went our different ways.

Weezer gets thrown into the emo mix because they are a heavy influence. Alot of emo bands stole their look from Weezer.

Weezer seems to be "emo" only because they put out "Pinkerton", which is probably the last "real" emo album ever put out. Everything else about them is emotionally dead.

Here's the rub...like that link said, emo really did used to rock. Then like ten years ago it merged with pop-punk and it became skinny guys with girl-hair crying into the mic. And I have no idea why.

Marginal Man, Dag Nasty, Government Issue - emo before it went queer... and way before fugazi.

Perrynoid Crack, junkies, guns, sluts 'n' cocaine.
