View Full Version : The shakes...

I've had this problem for a few years where for some reason my hands will shake. I generally notice this when I'm at work, or actually it's generally only pointed out to me by others at work. It's not a crazy shake, but rather they slightly shake. I always chocked it up to having too much caffiene because I used to drink a lot of coffee. But nowadays I don't drink it nearly as much. So now I'm wondering if it's something else.
When I'm at work I'm generally doing numerous things at once, and the tasks I have run the spectrum from installing pcs, to creating spreadsheets and reports. To research, or statistics to training and labor relations. I generally under the gun and I probably work myself harder than I need to, but at the time I always want to get whatever task I'm working on done so it's behind me. Part of me thinks that I probably have a lot on my plate that I'm trying to remember all the things I have to do and trying not to make mistakes and my nerves are displaying it by making my hands shake.
When I'm at home, or out with friends or just being casual I don't generally have this problem. So I don't know what it is, if it's a condition or whatever.

Maybe you're becoming hypoglycemic. You should get to the docs to make sure you're not developing diabetes.

Coffee will do it.
Most likely it's the knowledge that coworkers are laughing at you from across the room and you knowing there's nothing you can do about it.

I believe this is it...
Uncontrollable shaking of the hands, particularly when they are in use, or of the head
* Sometimes, quavering speech
Many people who have benign essential tremor worry that they are developing Parkinson's disease, a serious disease with many other symptoms besides tremor. It is usually easy, however, to tell the difference between the two conditions.
Parkinson's disease:
With Parkinson's disease, the tremor occurs when muscles are at rest. For example, the hands may shake when they are sitting quietly in a person's lap, but the shaking decreases when the person reaches out with the hand or uses it to hold something, such as a cup of tea or a playing card.
Essential tremor:
In contrast, essential tremor is most noticeable when the hands are in use, such as holding something or writing, and decreases when the hands are still."

OK everyone step aside, these are serious medical Qs, so let someone who knows what they're talking about these things say something: And that sure as Hell ain;t me, so:
See A Doctor, then a neurologist. He will do a neuro on you, and if you wish I can talk you through one, but forget that. Everything here assumes you've alread y seen and MD. Anyway...
----------------------------
There are about 29201 things that could cause this. Easy to find out if it'd the coffee; give it up completely for as long as Doc says. That may be a tough give-up, but you're talking shaking hands my friend, and in that 29201 thing, most are fine, but a few are nasty.
So can you please go see an MD and ask him for a neurological exam. He'll give you one anyway, but...

It might just be muscle contractions. Do you work out a few hours before you notice the shakes?

hand excercises while at work (http://www.thera-bandacademy.com/IV__Resource_Library/iv.a.4.c.i.exercises.html) are what I do to keep my hands from cramping up and in shape. I keep those spring things as well as small hand weights on my desk and will do mini workouts throughout the day. I also bend my fingers backward as far as I can with my other hand while flexing my wrist through its range, just to keep my hands, wrists and forearms limber. Yesterday, even though its BRICK out, I walked during lunch, just to get the blood flowing, maybe you need to get more active. Try walking to Route 110 and back.

For all the experts here, I went to the doctor and it turns out to be nerves.
It's one thing to offer suggestions, it's another to use shock posting to try and put a fear into someone and that is the very reason people are leaving this board or just not posting here anymore.
Before you try to become a junior Horde King you should actually have compassion for someone and their concerns without just jumping to the worst case conclusion.

mine shake cause im on too much medication. Its pretty funny, when i was in the hospital one time they were switching my meds and they had to ease me off the old ones and put me on the new ones so i was on 7 medications. My hands shoke so much i had trouble eating and drinking, I used to get food all over me, i wore a bib. I think you should stretch to relax your muscles.

For all the experts here, I went to the doctor and it turns out to be nerves.
I think there's one other thing you should consider (not that your doctor doesn't know what he/she's talking about). I come from a long line of heavy drinkers. One uncle's hands shake uncontrollably until he's had 4 or 5 vodka & cranberry's.
So if you drink a lot daily that might cause your quakes, assuming you don't drink while you're at work.
Of course, that begs more questions. Like, "how come your doctor's hands weren't shaking?"

While I do have the occasional drink, I'm by no means a heavy or steady drinker. I like to have some alcohol on the weekends, maybe a few beers or some wine, but that's about it. I'm by no means a casual drinker.
These last couple of days I paid good attention to my hands, they don't shake except when I'm feeling pressure, and when it does, it's very little. My doctor said precisely what I thought, that it appears that I get too raced up with the various responsibilities I have. I need to pace myself more, which I've already been working on. I have to take things in stride and just do my best. Very often I work so hard to not make mistakes that I get wrapped up in doing things right the first time. In the course of my day I have many responsibilities that prevent me from focusing on certain projects for long periods of time. I kind've have to get it done, and done right and move on to the next task, and many times do various things at once. These last few months have been very stressful because my company is merging and we're approaching the date when we become one so there's lots of pressure on me.
I'm just going to have to slow down and do the best I can without killing myself with stress.

My roommate's right arm shakes very visibly if he holds still and shows it off. He's seen several doctors about it and none of them really can determine a valid medical reason for it.

I'm just going to have to slow down and do the best I can without killing myself with stress.
it's good you had a professional check you out. as far as stress goes, maybe talk to your pp or a psychiatrist about possibly getting some xanax. i had something very similiar, except my fore front symptom was anxiety.
i'm only like a xanax starter kit - but i've found that since i have to do percision design work, when the anxiety would start up, my hands would get going, and my work would suffer. they don't get me downed out or slurry speeched, but it takes my anxiety down a notch and my hands are steadier than normal.
look into it, give it some thought; i was very hesitent about taking "drugs" to solve my problems, outside of thing i prescribe myself, but i found myself w/o any other options and i'm pretty satisfied with the results. stress kills.

Also, you're surprised people shock posted??? Haven't you been reading this board, people shock post in every category and in every subject. Did you really think this would be different???

Guess what, you're wrong. Shock posting has never been tolerated in posts of a highly personal nature (medical, death, etc.). People have been warned, if not banned, for it in the past.

Reefdwella is angry and claims people shock posted on this topic in order to scare him. That's the reference to shock posting, I didn't mean to suggest that the Moderators and Administrators would let someone shock post in a sensitive topic. See...

I'm not angry in anyway at anyone, but my attitude towards some of the responses I got was because I felt that people were trying to give me worst case scenarios and acting as if it HAD to be that. What bothered me most is that I continued to explain that the symptoms I was experiencing were not related to Parkinsons and the other much more serious diseases suggested. My read on the responses I was getting was that people trying to be shocking, when I was looking for advice and support. I may have read it wrong but I knew it wasn't the more serious diseases because I know the various symptoms of those diseases, none of which aside from the slight shaking I mentioned.
I'm just relieved that it wasn't anything serious.

zoom, no one accused you of shock posting, or you would have gotten a warning, just stating policy after what you said. No one really shock posted, but people do get sensitive in threads like these, so sometimes you have to tread lightly.

The mods don't necessarily read every single thread, plus there's no way anyone would know that you don't want your thread turned into something funny unless it's totally obvious. If you were so upset, you should have complained to a mod, and I if people had continued making fun of you, warnings and banning WOULD have been handed out. It has nothing to do with yoru post count.

The first thread i put up in 2004 was locked. Then the second post was locked.
Why am I not upset? Because it's a friggin message board on the internet; this is all a bunch of text, if I screw up and post something wrong, or redundant, and it gets locked, or moved, I don't give it a second thought.
