Hillary Clinton apologises for Gandhi joke

NEW YORK (AFP)- New York Senator Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) has felt obliged to apologise for making a joke about Indian independence hero Mahatma Gandhi having worked as a gas station manager in Saint Louis, Missouri.

"I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times," the former US first lady said in a statement.

"I truly regret if a lame attempt at humour suggested otherwise," the statement said.

The apology followed Clinton's remarks at a weekend fund-raiser, where she joked that Gandhi once "ran a gas station down in Saint Louis" -- a stereotypical job for South Asians in the United States.

At the time, Clinton had qualified her joke by adding that Gandhi was a "great leader" of the 20th century.

She can constantly be found all over the US and indeed the world, but you don't see her here nearly as often as we should. At least schumer sticks around.

Yeah, I noticed it too - I thought about changing it when I cut and pasted it in, but then thought - nah! What they hay! They wrote it! Heh-heh.

I think if it gets much more than a chuckle it's a mountain out a mole hill (no offense, Fat Mole). At the same time, it's kind of surprising that she would let herself get tripped up like that, making a comment so unscripted.

I think it's actually us, we Americans who use the z. My brit e-mail peeps use the s. It's often about guitar practice; and they're always talking of Practise and Practising. I think both are accpetable, well, depending on who. Oh yeah they write behaviour <--that way too. They also use 24 hour time, I dont know why we dont its so much easier, so I post this now at 1835.
