In the spirit of the Catwoman thread, with Oscar Winner Halle Berry, I've decided to throw out some people that should turn their statues back in...

Ben Affleck
Helen Hunt
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Whoopi Goldberg
Roberto Benigni
Gwyneth Paltrow

These are just some people who do not deserve that statue, simply based on the shitty decisions and movies they have made afterwards...!

Ben Affleck: 1997. He should give it back just for forgetting to thank Kevin Smith in his speech. He got the movie made, after all. Looking at rest of pack that year; Paul Anderson deserved it for Boogie Nights.

Helen Hunt: Same Year. A fantastic, bravura performance. And the other nominees were weak, notably Winslet for Titanic, and Densch for Mrs. Brown? Never saw it.

Cuba Gooding Jr.: 1996. Agreed. Rest of Pack was; Bill Macy/Fargo; the dude in Shine [edit: not Geoffrey Rush who won for Actor, other guy], Edward Norton/Primal Fear; James Woods/Ghosts of Mississippi. Beats me.

Whoopi Goldberg: 1990. Looking at others: Anette Benning in Grifters; Lorraine Bracco for Goodfellas; Diane Ladd for Wild at Heart; Mary McDonnell in Dances with Wolves. Well; it's obvious to me Dr. Melfi was robbed.

Roberto Benigni: 1998. Too powerful a film, too strong a performance; too risky a role; he couldn't NOT get it, even if he is a little hyperactive toad. Rest of Pack: Hanks/Saving Private Ryan [ouch, now I'm thinking]; Ian McKellen/Gods and Monsters; Nick Nolte/Affliction; Edward Norton/American History X [Double Ouch!!! That was also worthy.]

Gwyneth Paltrow: Same year. Rest of Pack: Cate Blanchett/Elizabeth; Fernanda Monenegro/ Central Station [?]; Meryl Streep/One True Thing; Emily Watson/ Hillary and Jackie. Didn't see a one; but Harvey bought that Best Picture Oscar for Shakespeare in Love. Over Saving Pvt. Ryan AND Life is Beautiful? No way.

I always resented Tom Hanks winning Oscars.
I think he won them because he played a gay guy and a tard, both socially concious roles.
I mean as far as talent as an actor he's still the same clown that was in Joe Versus The Volcano and Bossom Buddies.
They might as well have given one to Peter Scolari as well.

Are you kidding? I defy the man to write a movie that isn't crutched with dick 'n' fart jokes.

I love Smith's movies, but "Hunting" doesn't have his writing "flow." And the upcoming "Jersey Girl" looks like a wreck.

Then again, the trailers for "Clerks", "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy" were horrendous, yet those are my favorite films by him. So maybe there's hope.

Maybe.

Eh, she's only in it for about 20 minutes.

Affleck just about tanks performance-wise in almost everything else, but he and Smith seem to gel well. And if Smith can get actual workable performances out of a schmuck like Jason Mewes, why not Jennifer Lopez?

And I just watched the trailers to his first three films again last night on one of his DVD's. I love those films to death, but those clips make them each seem HORRIBLE.

Reasons behind my original pics -

Halle Berry - MONSTERS BALL was the only good thing she has done as an actress; it will only encourage no talents like Jennifer Lopez that they can take a break from making the mass appeal movies (like GIGLI, or in Halle's case - X-MEN, which I love) to make serious film. Angela Bassett deserves an award before Halle Berry.

Ben Affleck - The fact that he and Good Will Damon haven't written shit since this film came out is only part of the reason that Oscar needs to go back; he is a HORRIBLE actor, and should not even be allowed to look at an Oscar (any Oscar), much less own one.

Helen Hunt - An all right sit com actress gets an Oscar for a lousy movie. Glenn Close doesn't have an Oscar, but Mike's sister does.

Cuba Gooding Jr. - His Oscar in JERRY MAGUIRE was a make-up Oscar for his performance in BOYZ N THE HOOD, which was great. I don't mind make up Oscars as long as they distinguish themselves afterwards - RADIO, SNOW DOGS, STRAIGHT MAN ON A GAY CRUISE - or whatever...embarrassing.

Whoopi Goldberg - Same as above; she should have won for THE COLOR PURPLE, but because it was her first film, they didn't give it to her - GHOST?! Please...give me a break.

* The only reason I didn't include Robin Williams for his "make up" Oscar in GOOD WILL HUNTING was that it was to make-up for MANY films, going back to WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP and GOOD MORNING VIETNAM. The fact that he hasn't followed it up with anything of substance, however, puts him on the bubble.

Roberto Benigni - He can make all the best movies in the world from here on out, but the fact he made (and directed) PINNOCHIO shows he should give the little naked gold man back now.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Crummy actress from an over rated movie; she MAY redeem herself one day, but I'm not holding my breath. Gloria Swanson never won an Oscar, and yet this ninny has one.

Some last minute additions - I want all actors who have won an Oscar for Directing, for directing their first or second film, if they haven't made more than 3 films to step forward and hand that Oscar in.

Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson have Oscars for directing, yet Martin Scorsese does not - and Coster actually beat Marty in 1991 with DANCES WITH WOLVES over GOODFELLAS!!!

Clint Eastwood should be the only actor allowed to direct - so far he's directed 26 films, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets his second nomination for MYSTIC RIVER.

2003 has been the year, for me, of shitty trailers that didn't make me want to see a movie, only then to turn around and have the movie be great: BAD SANTA, MASTER AND COMMANDER and SCHOOL OF ROCK all looked like garbage, but they all turned out to be a lot of fun.

It's usually the other way around - great trailer, horrible movie. Stephen Hunter, at the Washington Post, had a theory that the trailer was the true end-product of the movie making business.

LOST IN SPACE comes in mind there - fun trailer, but one of the worst movies ever.
