View Full Version : Dried nasal passages

For the last week or so, I've had a minor cold. Nothing major, more of a runny nose and blocked nasal passages, but my nose has been so dried out from the weather, making this condition fairly unbarable. If I rob or blow my nose hard enough, I get blood in with the mucus. It isn't a bloody nose, just a little bit mixed in.
As much fun as that sounds, is there anything I can do to help my dried out nasal passages?

They sell nose sprays that deal with dried nasal passages. Check your local drugstore.

Dude, I got the remedy for you........it's called Natru-vent. It's just all natural saline purified water mist spray, non-medicated, alcohol and preservative free. I use it all the time, it's great.
I had a hard time finding it after Pathmark stopped carrying it, but I located it on a website called drugstore.com. It's not expensive, give it a try, I guarantee you'll love it. Their website is www.natru-vent.com..........you'll thank me later.

Also don't take sudafed or any other vasoconstrictor. That will also contribute to the drying.
And get a humidifier!!!!

I know this sounds weird, but believe me, its the only way I found to get through the dry winter air without the problems you describe.
http://www.nutraceutic.com/images/Neti/sol-neti.jpg
Its called the Neti Pot (http://www.nutraceutic.com/Products/Ayurveda/AncientSecrets/ancientsecretsnetipot.htm), and what you do is, you fill it with warm, salted water, and allow a stream of water to flow into one nostril and out the other while holding your head over a sink and it flushes out your sinus's and moisturizes your membranes. They have different additives you can add to the water that can help get rid of irritation. I didnt think it was a good idea the fisrt time I saw it either. They usually have them in health food stores or online.

Last night, I had no more of the saline spray, so I literally snorted water, into my sinuses, from my cupped hand.
It helped me till about 5:00 am, and then that's all she wrote>

Geek.
I agree with sr71blackbird. I've used a neti pot and it helps. Hot showers do too.

What water do you use ? Spring or distilled, or just plain dirty tap water ? What kind of salt......kosher, iodized, or sea salt ? I'm sure it makes a nice mess when you use it, and I'm real sure it's super convenient at 3 a.m in the morning. This item to me sounds like the poor man's remedy..........you know, like in a pinch, you could use a corn cob to wipe your ass.
Buy a bottle or two of Natru-vent.......no mess, use it anywhere at anytime, and get with modern times.

I used saline, as in the stuff you use for contact lenses. It's not too messy if you use it over a sink. And, no, I wouldn't recommend using it at 3am. Nyquil works just fine to make me sleep without congestion. I've used the neti pot during the day to keep breathing free. It may be a "poor man's remedy," but it does indeed work better than using a corn cob to wipe your ass.
And why are you wiping your ass with a corn cob at 3am???

I use warm filtered tap water with sea salt, or else this product in mine, which is available behind the counter at Walgreens without a prescription.http://www.medichest.com/images/226753.jpg

I went to CVS and picked up a saline spray called "Ayr" and it seems to be working well. Breathing is a lot less painful. PLus it came with a free sample of their gel product, which I'll take home and try (don't know how bad it'll look to have gel around my nose in the office)

Ayrs good. The gels good too. Also try this, take a dab of this on a cotton swab and coat the insides of your nostrils. Its good stuff! Available at most pharmacys, you may have to ask behind the counter for it.

they hide the Ayn Rand books behind the counters at pharmacies now? What next, Fahrenheit 451 becomes a reality?

AYR always reminded me of AYN Rand for some reason. An ear nose and throat doctor prescribed the Borolium for me when I had just your symptoms and it was very helpful. In fact, today I put some in my own nostrils. It has a slight vics scent and it lubricates your sinuses to prevent them drying out.
