View Full Version : My Bold Oscar Predictions...!

Even before nominations are out, I will do my radio psychic -
BEST PICTURE - "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" - this will be more to reward all three films than simply this one; "Cold Mountain" and "Mystic River," "Seabiscuit" and "Master and Commander" will also (more than likely) get nominated.
BEST DIRECTOR - Peter Jackson - same as above; Jackson has had multiple nominations, not just for Rings - he has a writing nomination for the wonderfully disturbing Heavenly Creatures (1994) Clint Eastwood may get nominated for "Mystic River." The director of "Cold Mountain," Minghella , already has one Oscar, so while he will get nominated, he won't win. Peter Weir will get a nod for "Master and Commander" and maybe the "Seabiscuit" guy.
BEST ACTOR - Sean Penn (Either "Mystic River" or "21 Grams") - nominated three times and hasn't won; if not him, then it's Bill Murry. If there was a God Bruce Campbell would get a nomination for "Bubba-Hotep!" Cruise should NOT be nominated for that "Samuraii" movie - very boring and predictible performance. Jude Law and Tobey Maguire will also get a nomination, but won't win.
BEST ACRTESS - Charlize Theron ("Monster") - no fucking contest. Nicole Kidman will be nominated, but won't win since they just gave her one. Jennifer Connelly ("House of Sand and Fog") and Naomi Watts ("21 Grams") were also great, and should get nominated.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Ian McKellen ("Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King") - nominated for first LOTR, and earlier in "Gods and Monsters" and should have been nominated in both "Cold Comfort Farm" and "Richard III." Jeff Bridges ("Seabiscuit"), Benicio Del Toro ("21 Grams") and Tim Robbins ("Mystic River") are also shoe-ins for nominations.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Ren‚e Zellweger ("Cold Mountain") - an excellent role where she channeled the spirit of Irene "Granny" Ryan into the body of a 30 year old. They will feel it is a make-up for her not winning with "Chicago" last year." Scarlett Johanson will more than likely get a nomination - not her year yet. Patricia Clarkson may also get nodiced for her wonderful role in the new Thanksgiving Tradition film around the old KOP Manor, "Pieces of April."
We'll find out soon enough on the nominations...

Oscar Nominations are out...!
Only one of my predictions to win didn't get nominated ("Ian McClellan" for supporting actor). I'll stand by my original pics, with a few side notes...
BEST PICTURE - "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" "Lost in Translation," "Mystic River," "Seabiscuit" and "Master and Commander"
* I only missed one on this - really happy "Translation" got a nomination over that over-hyped "Cold Mountain" Still think it's LOTR, however Translation seems to have all the mo'.
BEST DIRECTOR - Peter Jackson ("LOTR"), Clint Eastwood ("Mystic River") Peter Weir (Mster and Bation: The Far Side of The Whatever"), will get a nod for "Master and Commander" Fernando Meirelles ("City of God") Sophia Coppola ("Lost in Translation")
* Happy for Sophia; still sticking with the fat man to be rewarded for his impressive thrillogy, but she may win, simply because there have been no other women who have won for director. Surprised that Minghella didn't get nominated. Thilled about the guy who did "City of God." A brilliant, yet distubing film from Brazil no one saw.
BEST ACTOR - Sean Penn ("Mystic River"), Bill Murray ("Lost in Translation"), Jude Law ("Cold Mountain"), Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Cariboo: The Curse of the Pearl Bailey"); Ben Kingsley ("House of Sand and Fog");
* Again, 3 for 5. Thrilled that Cruise didn't get nominated, and thrilled that Ben Kingsley did. Johnny Depp??? Couldn't they have waited until he did another good movie, instead of this??
BEST ACRTESS - Charlize Theron ("Monster")Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider.") Diane Keaton ("Something's Gotta Give"); Samantha Morton ("In America"); Naomi Watts ("21 Grams.")
* Happy to see the little girl from "Whale Rider" get nominated - my favorite film from 2003, followed by "Translation"; surprised Nicole or Jennifer Connelly didn't get the nod. This is Charlize's award, no doubt about it, so it really doesn't matter.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Alec Baldwin ("The Cooler"); Benicio Del Toro ("21 Grams"); Djimon Hounsou ("In America"); Tim Robbins ("Mystic River"); and Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai.")
* Screwed up this one big time - only got 2 for 4; since Sir Ian is out of the running, my money is now on Robbins, but Benicio and Alec could also sneak away with it.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Ren‚e Zellweger ("Cold Mountain"), Shohreh Aghdashloo ("House of Sand and Fog"); Patricia Clarkson ("Pieces of April"); Marcia Gay Harden ("Mystic River"); and Holly Hunter ("thirteen.")
* 2 for 3 here; disappointed Miss Scarlett didn't get the respect she deserves - as Ron said last night, without her, that movie doesn't work. Yeah, I didn't see anyone else mentioning Patricia Clarkson, JJ! HA! WOO! HOO! If there is a god (or goddess) she will win! Still betting on Renee, but I think Clarkson could sneak on in.
Speaking of Just Jon...
Must be tough picking the front runners.
It was a labor of love; next time I'll be certain to pick films that have no chance of winning, and make sure not to provide my own reasons behind the picks.

LOTR deserves all the technical awards, best adapted screenplay and best director...if it gets anything else, I shall cry.
I'll never understand why best film and best director have to go hand-in-hand. The two can be and usually are two different films. This year I was impressed by LOTR, mainly because of the spectacular and almost heroic directing of Peter Jackson. The man deserves the award. But the movie that really just "got to me", stuck in my head, and made me go see it again and again was "Lost in Translation", so I feel THAT desveres best picture. But of COURSE it's not the best directed...
But even with "Lost", the greatness rests mostly with the acting performances, namely Murray. But again, Oscar usually lumps the best actor/director/film awards all together...why?!?! It's so fucking lazy and false.

ugh, why does "Lost in Translation" give me a whole "Annie Hall" vibe?
No matter what, the Academy is full of it. Studios put way too much emphasis in what they think, and I'm pretty sure they don't even watch the movies. That's actually the only way I can see any reasoning behind Sean Astin not getting a best actor nom.

I loved Kill Bill, but it was half of a movie - the screenplay was Quinton's weakest.
I think the animated Oscar is bullshit - they should let it compete with the rest of the films, like Beauty and the Beast did 12 years ago. Of those, it's got to be Nemo, right? I don't know...I will be seeing the "Sisters" when it opens this week, though.

Johnny Depp??? Couldn't they have waited until he did another good movie, instead of this??
He was fucking BRILLIANT in that movie!
I rank it up there with Kevin Kline in a Fish Called Wanda.
I really think Depp has a good chance to win this and shock the hell out of EVERYONE.
But if it does not go to him it has a stronger chance to go to Sean Penn. The acadamy has a habit of rewarding actors who have been screwed by them in the past. (He should have won for I Am Sam)
This is going to be one of the 1st AA's that I will have interest in watching. For the movies AND to see how they handle the onslaught of celebrities who have died in the past year.

Ok I am as big a Star Wars fan as you could almost find. (JustJon excluded). But there was NO way that Star Wars Deserved an Acadamy award for Best Film. Did Annie Hall? I do not know because I do not know the other films that were being nominated. Star Wars got the oscars is should have...Special Effects....Sound and Score...ect.
But this was also a time when so many people were just in awe of Woddy Allen (KID TOUCHER!) and he was kissing their asses for oscar oscar oscar.
But then again if TITANIC could have made best picture then Star Wars should have made at least a nomination.
Besides I think Empire was the best of the three films.

Hey, give the guy credit. He was basically making nothing but great movies at that point, and he hadn't yet touched the kids. And the guy is about as anti-Oscar/Hollywood as you can get. Has he even gone to an Oscar Ceremony yet? Or was he there when "Annie Hall" won and THEN he stopped going?

The Oscars don't like popcorn movies. They give them technical oscars and shoo them into the closet. I think Star Wars' cultural impact shows what a superior movie it was to Annie Hall, but then again, I don't care for most Woody Allen movies to begin with.

Are you forgetting the plot of Manhattan?!
I love Woody's early films, then it sort of became every other film. Now I'm not a big fan of the new stuff.
I really like the films he's not in - Radio Days, Bullets Over Broadway, Hannah and Her Sisters and Purple Rose of Cairo are all wonderful films!
Maybe my absolute favorite is Love and Death, going way back.

My cynical Oscar predictions: (I think the Oscars have become a joke and a fraud and these are the disappointments I expect to see this year.)
Picture: "Mystic River"
Were it not for the last 20 minutes, when the wheels just fell off the story, this movie might deserve it. I predict the Academy will figure nobody will notice.
Director: Peter Jackson
Admittedly I haven't seen it yet, but I agree that this will be in recognition of all three films.
Actor: Johnny Depp
Murray and Penn deserve it. Ben Kingsley deserves it virtually every movie he makes. Murray was snubbed without a nomination for Rushmore. Penn's been passed over three times, two of which were outstanding performances. Law won't get it because apparently Miramax didn't work for "Cold Mountain," thus the "snub" for best pic nomination. Depp should have been nominated for "Fear and Loathing," "Ed Wood," and maybe "Edward Scissorhands," but now that he gets his first nomination for a movie he shouldn't have, he's a shoo-in. Also huge snub in this category is the absence of Paul Giamatti for "American Splendor."
Actress: Charlize Theron
Even I'm not so cynical not to pick her.
Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins
I think the studio pushed this film hard. It was a complex role and I think Robbins did OK in it, but I never forgot that it was Tim Robbins. So: 1. This is the only movie in this category I've seen, and 2. I doubt this is the best performance in the bunch. I'm picking Tim to win.
Supporting Actress: Marcia Gay Harden
I think she did a fine job, but the main reason Zellweger won't get it is "Cold Mountain" is getting shut out for not taking everyone in the Academy out for shrimp cocktails.
Adapted Screenplay: LOTR
See Best Director. The screenplay categories used to be where they put the really good movies, but that didn't have the mass appeal. "American Splendor" should win it but won't.
Original Screenplay: "Finding Nemo"
"The Station Agent" belongs here if not in the Best Picture category, and I think it should even be a favorite. Instead it doesn't even get nominated, which is the kind of snub that makes me hate the Academy in the first place. My choice would be between "Dirty Pretty Things," (but nobody saw it), and "Lost in Translation." My guessing Nemo gets it is me betting that the Academy is just taking straight payola and Disney would pay a bribe in underage Bangkok hookers if they could.

I'm glad for ROTK getting 11 nods. But I'm still disappointed at the Academy for not nominating Sean Astin for Best Supporting Actor.
Of all the actors in that movie, he really stood out the most.
Anyway, all I want is for ROTK to win Best Picture and Best Director. The rest of the other nods should be a shoo-in.

This KOP fellow was right on the ball, making such amazingly astute observation before the nominations were even made (ok, he missed Tim Robbins, but he did pick him out of the pack when the nominations were made).
A perfect score.
Oh, I know...I know...I'm sure there are some that will say (and by "some" I mean Ron and Just Jon) that it was a boring year with no drama or surprises - that it was a no brainer that RINGS would be rewarded (I'm sure I'm not the only person to make that prediction 3 years ago, that they were waiting for the last one to reward it).
Picking the 4 acting winners out of the 20 nominees wasn't that tough, when you look at Oscar's history of rewarding past performances (3 of the 4 could be argued were receiving Oscars to salute their career's, and the 4th turned in such a career making performance she couldn't be denied, no matter how much we like Diane Keaton's boobs).
If Renee hadn't won she would have had to change her name to "Susan Lucci" - to go 0-3 in 3 years. Hers was the only winning Oscar I wasn't happy about, although who wouldn't have loved to have seen Bill Murray get it?! The man is just the best - a real class act, in my opinion.
The only real drama was that Best Actor award, however when it got to after midnight and the only surprise we got turned out to be trying to guess who will be the last person on the "In Memorial" dead-reel ("Donald O'Connor"), because you know they always save one that really tugs at your heard for the end, it was pretty clear Penn was more than likely going to win it. No Depp, and no Murray.
Ok...to recap...this KOP dude is very perseptive. It's no wonder he's as cherished as he is by Ron and Fez.
Wish he posted more.
