i'm sorry i can't find a decent link, but i was listening to this on npr the other day. all the politics aside, how the fuck do you make $18/hr doing the work a monkey can do?

they're threatened by super walmart and such b/c they are selling groceries in their stores now. since walmart is non-union, they aren't obligated to pay that much money for a job pushing buttons that doesn't even require a g.e.d.

shit, i should have said fuck the rest of hs, fuck college and the debt i'm in now, i'll do monkey for at 38g's a year. fucking ponderous.

Most major grocery chains start at at least $10 an hour.

I work in a major Grocery store now(Giant Food), and I make about 10.50 an hour, have good benefits, and am in a Union(United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400). My Dad has worked for Giant for 25 years, and I believe he makes around 22 an hour. I don't know if they are starting people at 10 an hour now, but when i started about 5 years ago i started at 7.50, but i haven't gotten a raise in a while( i think i'm almost topped out). But those people that make like 18 an hour are mostly full time, and in our chain, our parent company Ahold is phasing those people out, because they can hire 3 or 4 people for what my dad makes. Giant has changed a lot the last few years since Ahold took over. Its become so undesirable to work there any more. People used to live for the day when they could work themselves into upper management and get their own store, but the company doesn't even promote from within anymore, so whats the use?

The contract between Ahold and our Union is up in March I believe, and there's a strong possiblity we could go on strike, which scares the hell out of me because I don't want to get pummeled crossing a picket line. Also, they are trying to buy out all the 25-30 year people like my dad, which is also scary because I dont know what he and my mother will do for money, because her job doesn't pay very much at all.

And have you ever worked in a Grocery store? Its not "monkey work"...its like working in a factory or any other kind of blue collar job. My dad's job at Giant has put food on our table and clothes on our family's back for 25 years. Hell my dad's knees and ankles are so shot to hell, he can't even walk up the stairs any more, he has to crawl. Its a tough job, not only for the amount of manual labor, but also having to deal with annoying customers who treat us like crap..

calm down monkey boy.

most of my friends started working at the local foodtown when we started H.S. I went the way of the golden arches. they all hated it. two still work there and I think they make something like $12 an hour after 10+ years.

Its a pretty execrable job....thats why I'm working my ass off to get through school so i don't have to work there for the next 30 years...

el mudo, no offense, i wasn't trying to diss your job. but growing up, the grocery store was one of the places you could work in high school. there are no unions, and most of the adults are managers or down-on-their-luck people.

i worked at 2 back in the day, and made minimum wage, maybe a lil more. but i got pissed knowing that people in cali were pulling in $18/hr, when i make $10/hr in a position requiring a college degree.
