How's it political advice?

The guy's writing a glorified editorial. So when you get right down to it, he's little different from the average modern journalist.

And I'm not saying the guy is right in whatever he thinks. I just forsee this as inevitably being another "pile on the rich guy" bit. If Arnold can get away with it, everyone else gets at LEAST a temporary free pass.

The star wrote that the situation was "a powder keg" and robberies, murder, kidnappings, rape were "commonplace".

first margret cho's a comedian, now he's a star. can i start calling myself, omipotent, ruler of the univrse, and part time porn star. mods, please change my quote.

Many Iraqis I speak to tell me there is no freedom in occupation, nor trust in unilateral intervention.

who the fuck expects freedom and a working government in under a year? maybe when iraqis stop murdering, raping, kidnapping, and robbing iraqis, we can transfer power. otherwise we'll be accused of abandoning them and allowing what ever fucked up state that develops.

ok, mojo you got me. the margret cho comparison is unwarrented and he has been in some pretty good movies (and to be fair, i haven't seen anything he's been in this past year) but, in my opinion, he's average in acting skills.

Fair enough.

He was in two of the better films of the past year, "21 Grams" and "Mystic River". I dug 'em.

Did anyone think to read the actual articles, which were linked from the article? I found them much better written, intelligent and interesting than I expected, (and than the excerpts that this piece portray).

Eh, I'll give the guy credit...he's a decent writer. And at least he's actually there. Good read. Nice job, Penn.

Ths is going off of the topic at hand, and i'm sorry for it. This is just something that bothers me everytime a celebrity opens their mouth.
Everyone has to jump all over them for having an opinion, whether it be complimentary or one of disdain, everyone gets up in arms. As if the fact that the person saying it is a celebrity makes the statements any less warranted. Its as if the fact of a celebrity having an opinion makes that opinion worthless just because of the status of the person saying it.
Whether you agree with it or not, the opinions of celebrities are no smarter or dumber than your next door neighbor saying them. You know that in the course of your day, you will run into one person or another that shares the same opinions as a celebrity, whether they say it or not. The only difference from the opinions of the average person's opinions is that their's isn't televised. Why does the fact that a celebrity voices an opinion make that opinion worthless?
As i said, sorry for going off topic, and this isn't in regards to anything said here, its just something that bothers me everytime someone has to put down a celebrity's opinion just because of their public standing.

i thought it was usually the government that gave them the reasons. That plus the fact that "the simple life" actually got reasonable ratings.

I actually agree with both of you.

People jump on guys like Penn for just having an opinion...but does anyone think for a SECOND that anyone in Hollywood (Or big business, for that matter) really gives a damn how they present themsevles, and by default, US, to the rest of the world?
