This question is pretty technical, but I'm stuck and need some help.

On my computer at home I have Windows XP with 3 hard drives. 1 of which is a SCSI hard drive, which is the main drive that Windows XP runs off of. The other two hard drives are IDE. I bought a new 80gb hard drive yesterday and I want to replace one of the IDE drives with the new drive. My problem is, that the IDE drive I want to replace is set as the master drive. The second hard drive is the slave to it (don't mean to be racist with the terms). When I tried to replace the master drive and install the new one I could only get up to the boot up portion of startup on the computer, it would keep telling me to reboot.

On startup, I can see the BIOS is recognizing the new drive, but for whatever reason it will not let windows proceed to load and open for me. When I took the new drive out and put the old one back, it started up fine.

I'm stuck as to why this is, is it because the new drive isn't formatted? I was thinking that I'd start up the system and format the new drive within Windows XP. Also the new drive is set as the master as well.

I know this is a bit of a techie question, but I'm trying to figure this out.

I have the exact same problem. It will not boot off the slave after I made a copy of my master, even after I switched to make the slave the master.

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker

Try starting the computer in safe mode the add new hardware. This may work. Also, was there ANY type of system information on the old drive? Another option would be to set the new 80gig as a slave, install it and format it(hopefully it will book ok.) Then reset the jumper to master and try that.

Unless you made an EXACT bit for bit copy of the drive with something like norton ghost, the method of copy from one drive to the other will not work, especially if there is an operating system present.

I was contemplating changine the master/slave configuration with the jumpers, so I'll try that tonight when I get home. If it does work, then I'll format the new drive and then try swapping the jumpers back to the way they were supposed to be.

BTW I got the drive at Micro Center for $69, not too bad at all for an 80 gig hard drive. It's a Seagate with a 3 year warranty.

This is a little more work than you want, but it'll work. Starting with your original configuration:

-Disconnect the current slave and install the new drive as the slave.
-Boot up normally (it will, don't worry).
-You should be able to format the new drive from there, as well as copy all the data from the old master to the new one.
-Shut down
-Take out the old master. Make the new drive the master and reconnect your old slave
-Boot up. You should be good from there.

Ya see all the wonderful help you get from the RF board?

is it 5400 or 7200RPM? I am always looking for a good deal on hard drives for my home server. Can never have to much space. Anyway if you need more help look for me on AIM, my s/n is JPM NICK. PM me with yours so i can add you to my list, because I have everyone blocked except buddy's.

Another thing is to change the jumper settings to "Cable Select" This allows the computer to determine which position on the ribbon the drive is.

Sounds right, I'll try that first.

I got it working, I followed Matty Bronx's method and got it to work, the only difference for me that got it to work though was that I had to set the 80gb drive to be the slave instead of the master and I made the other 40gb drive the master instead, everything worked after that.

Thanks for all the help.
