What's a "Hemi" and why is such a big deal?

What the hell is a Hemi and what does it do? Why is it such a selling point in a new vehicle?

Something to do with the shape of the cylinders, making them better and more efficient (I think). And I know only Dodge has it.

i was told it is just the maker of the engine.... like the diesel engine is made by cummings or something. but i was also told that hemi has always made their gas engine and that this is just a new marketing ploy.

In a short definition, a "Hemi" is a carburetor with hemispherical chambers which allow the fuel and air to mix better.

The way it was explained to me: when a normal piston reaches its' top position, the top if it comes flush with the top of the chamber/cylinder. In the case of a Hemi, the top of the piston itself is dug out in a semi-hemispherical shape (like the indent at the top of some wooden baseball bats), which helps create more compression power.

That, & adding freon to my A/C system, are the extent of my mechanical knowledge.

No, Dodge and/or Fox got the truck for exchange for the plug (Like Nicole would say "this 2004 dodge dakota" is for you!) And if they (really the Hilton and Richie Families) were going to buy them a truck they could have got them a nice work truck. Even get a fancy one like a Lincoln Blackwood or Cadallac Escalade Pickup.

Paris and Nicole just drove it. BTW is Nicole allowed to drive?

While I am sure the word "Hemi" has something to do with the makeup of the engine it is more a marketing tool used to create 'top of the mind' awareness. Its created a buzzword and people think its better without knowing exactly why.

a hemi is what all the dodge muscle cars used to have in em too, in the 60's and 70's to give them more horsepower to the engines... blew through gas and they stopped making em.
*edit* more air mixes with gas, the faster it burns.
