to a day when those dastardly unions didn't exist and employers can make sure they're employees are working! (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/18/national/18WALM.html?hp)

It was 3 a.m., Mr. Rodriguez recalled, some heavy machinery had just smashed into his ankle, and he had no idea how he would get to the hospital.

The Sam's Club, a Wal-Mart subsidiary, had locked its overnight workers in, as it always did, to keep robbers out and, as some managers say, to prevent employee theft. As usual, there was no manager with a key to let Mr. Rodriguez out. The fire exit, he said, was hardly an option - management had drummed into the overnight workers that if they ever used that exit for anything but a fire, they would lose their jobs.

"My ankle was crushed," Mr. Rodriguez said, explaining he had been struck by an electronic cart driven by an employee moving stacks of merchandise. "I was yelling and running around like a hurt dog that had been hit by a car. Another worker made some phone calls to reach a manager, and it took an hour for someone to get there and unlock the door.

"The reason for Mr. Rodriguez's delayed trip to the hospital was a little-known Wal-Mart policy: the lock-in. For more than 15 years, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, has locked in overnight employees at some of its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. It is a policy that many employees say has created disconcerting situations, such as when a worker in Indiana suffered a heart attack, when hurricanes hit in Florida and when workers' wives have gone into labor.

"You could be bleeding to death, and they'll have you locked in," Mr. Rodriguez said. "Being locked in in an emergency like that, that's not right."

Retailing experts and Wal-Mart's competitors said the company's lock-in policy was highly unusual. Officials at Kmart, Sears, Toys "R" Us, Home Depot and Costco, said they did not lock in workers.

Even some retail industry experts questioned the policy. "It's clearly cause for concern," said Burt Flickinger, who runs a retail consulting concern. "Locking in workers, that's more of a 19th-century practice than a 20th-century one."

Several Wal-Mart employees said that as recently as a few months ago they had been locked in on some nights without a manager who had a key. Robert Schuster said that until last October, when he left his job at a Sam's Club in Colorado Springs, workers were locked in every night, and on Friday and Saturday nights there was no one there with a key. One night, he recalled, a worker had been throwing up violently, and no one had a store key to let him out.

"They told us it's a big fine for the company if we go out the fire door and there's no fire," Mr. Schuster said. "They gave us a big lecture that if we go out that door, you better make sure it's an emergency like the place going up on fire."

Augustine Herrera, who worked at the Colorado Springs store for nine years, disputed the company's assertion that it locked workers in stores in only high-crime areas, largely to protect employees.

"The store is in a perfectly safe area," Mr. Herrera said.

I honestly can't believe I just read that.

We did in fact have the "lock-in" policy in effect when I was working floor maintenence at WM a few years back. They would let us out at 12:15 am, 3 am and 5:00 am for our smoke breaks. Things did get strict later on and we would be locked in and have to smoke inside. It got to be a pain int he ass after a while but since I was in management most of the time, we would sneak out for smoke breaks and what-not. It usually wasn't a hassle to go outside if there was an emergency. The one night when i was doing floor maintenece, I pulled the spout out on one of these Boxes of Stripper and the entire 5 Gallon case soaked and BURNED my arms and it shot all over my legs. They let me out for that one. My luck, I get pulled over on the way to my house to shower and the cop sees me in nothing but boxers on a 55 degree evening. Man was that a predicament.

I still draw you know. (http://www.pleaseforgetme.com/SIGS/EaglesPanthers.jpg)

We have "lock-ins"/overnights several times a month at my store, but at least one key/code-carrying manager MUST be there the entire time.

I can't believe Wal-mart gets away with that.

It's understandable with Walmart, I mean c'mon, all those Mexicans wanting to steal...
I think it'd be more understandable to have a keypad-locked exit door, in which they could call a manager to get the code for.

I don't understand why the guy didnt use the fire exit. Yea, he'd get fired, and possibly face charges for setting off an alarm, but he'd probably have his ass backed by a lot of people, and Wallmart'd get into more trouble. I've never stepped foot into wallmart.

i don't see the real harm here; if they don't think to just use the fire door, then its their own stupidity. Whether or not the management stated that there'd be firings if they use the firedoors, in the case of an emergency, theres no reason not to.
i couldn't get to the article, because i didn't want to sign up and everything, but i read about this somewhere else, and the part that really pissed me off was that a few people mentioned getting off from work after the store was locked, and then having to spend the next 3-5 hours just hanging out in the store with no chance to go home.

Yeah, why wouldnt they call an ambulance? Once the cops and the ambulance got there and they saw the situation, Im sure theyd be fined. Dont they get late night deliveries by tractor trailer? Isnt there a large door that the tractor backs up to? I really cant believe that since the Triangle Shirtwaist fire that their upper management would even contemplate locking in workers, and if they did have a policy like that, why would you work there? No one forces you to work who you work for.

I worked at Costco for 14 years and this would never happen. There would never be a time when employees are in the store without a senior manager with keys. But Walmart has a completely different management style. It's reputation is repulsive, and according to the ex-Walmart managers that I've known at Costco, the reality is even worse than it's reputation. That company cares about nothing but profits. I haven't shopped there in 10 years or longer.

Um...how about getting the STORE in trouble for locking in employees? Theyd have to break down the door or tell the people to open the fire door and then the store would be in trouble if they fired someone for using an exit in an emergency!

Don't you think they asked the manager if they could use the fire door? And don't you think the manager would want to save a trip and tell them to use the fire door?! Obviously both those things DID NOT happen. I bet that manager told them not to use it.[/color]

Why are you yelling at me? I agree with you. Also, if you called 911 and told them you were stuck inside and hurt and cant get out, they for shit sure would break the door down!
To give Walmart a break though, I think alot of people hype up some of these storys to make them look worse then they are and to hurt the companys stock value to prevent the it from growing. Again, if conditions are so bad, why would you work there? I think theres more here than meets the eye. If it turns out they are really doing this to their help, then of course, they deserve to get hammered.

It said that Wal-Mart just recently altered their policy to require managers with keys be there. So, in this case, it seems that the manager wasn't supposed to be there.

Fuck Wall-Mart and thier policy. My main point here is that this person wasnt really hurt bad at all. If he was, they wouldve went out the door and or called an ambulance. Now if its anything that actually requires some sort of medical attention, you sit there and HOPE PRAY that you get fired. Holy shit would that be a ticket to the easy life

Actually i would, should an emergency arose i would have no problem using the emergency exit to seek care. Having them fire me for using the emergency exit in the time of an emergency would not scare me in any way, because i know there is no just cause for firing, and thusly the wrongful termination suit would pay me off nicely.
