Some songs just have fucking awesome openings that get you pumped when you hear them come on. But a lot of times these intros lead into songs that aren't as good as their beginings... Great examples:

Skinnard - Mississippi Queen
AC/DC - Back In Black
Metallica - Master Of Puppets

Well; one of the classics, the Drum Intro to Led Zep's rocked and roll, was great, until some fucking car commercial used it; ruined for a very, very long time. I still can't listen to Bohemian Rhapsody because of the dark, stygian depths that the Wayne's World movies that traverse my corpus collosum.

Well, to continue the AC/DC motif, "Thunderstruck" has to be thrown in there.

I've also always liked the opening of the title track to the "Judgement Night" soundtrack by Biohazard and Onyx.

Buena is an awesome song.
Down on the World Again, wonderful.
Judgement Night, that takes me back.
(i'd also say Punishment, complete with the movie sample, is a classic intro)

I'd add:
Out There by Dinosaur Jr.
Raining Blood by Slayer

And in the original spirit of the post, I think the new song by Linkin Park has a really interesting intro (i'm almost embarresed to admit), but then the song is crap.
Also the really old KoRn song where he screams Are You Ready has a really hard intro and then the song is just awful after that.

Oh, my bad... KaZaa said it was Skynyrd. ;p

Voodoo Child is definitely a favorite of mine and a perfect example of a song that goes downhill after its opening. I think Hollywood Hogan's use of this song as entrance music actually made the song MORE badass in my mind.

I would add:

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
Oye Como Va - Santana
Hell's Bells
Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Cult of Personality (Ron reminded me)
Running with the Devil - Van Halen

And, where heavy metal means lots of brass instruments,
Carmina Burana (Fortuna Emperatrix Mundi, or something like that)

Ride of the Valkyrie

are you referring to the Wagner piece; best known as played in the sunrise Helicopter attack sequence in Apocylypse Now?

Hope so; because they is indeed as Heavy as any heavy metal music could ever hope to aspire; as is much of classical music.

Ahhh, if Wolfie had a Les Paul and a Marshall Stack... who knows?

For more kick ass orchestral, that's heavy and you heard it before even if ya think you didn't:

That's Michael Savage's show theme when he comes in from commercial. See, I know that cuz i'm so oft deprived of a regular Big Ass Show.

P.S. Kind of odd Savage using Metallica, considering he sounds like he's 70 years old, and could be the husband of Iris from Bay Ridge Brooklyn.

Than it regrets me to inform you of the existance of the song "Detective 27" by G/Z/R.

Interestingly, both songs in question feature Burton C. Bell's vocals, formerly of Fear Factory.
