Another flaming attempt by the liberal, communist, hippy left to discredit the President through illegitimite means!!! I listened to the speech and yes, he did say 2 years old and then immediately corrected himself and said 10 years old. What's the matter, MR., you NEVER made a mistake when you read something out loud....maybe you should be president of these United States...then we could change the name of our wonderful country to Hippy, Liberal, Red States of the Illiterate!!!! Whenever heavy applause broke out, Ted Kennedy either shook his head or played with his face. What a mutt.
I suspected that Rangel was asleep, but I wasn't sure if he just was trying to diss Bush because they had that shot during a standing ovation.
I enjoyed the parts of the speech about the war when the cameras focused on Hilary and she had this "I voted for so now I gotta stand and it pisses me off" look on her face. She looked angry all night long.
I've come to the conclusion that Condoleeza Rice is a shorty. I would definitely bang her, given the chance.

A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our Nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.
The outcome of this debate is important - and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.
I like how he basically said that homosexuals aren't people. Denying them the right to get married, I suppose, is also a way to treat them with dignity and value... well I guess if God sees their dignity and value, Bush and the Constitution don't have to. Woo hoo!! Let's write intolerance back into the constitution!!!!!! Yee haw!
While we're at it, can we write back in that blacks and whites can't marry? Maybe not let women to vote?

Well, it can be spun that way, and even take it further that the Democrats were clapping for the terrorists to take over while the Republicans are the only real patriots that are here to protect us, OR you can look at it from the other point of view (and others already have) and note that the Republicans clapped at the phrase "The terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule," which could indicate, if you want to be literal, that it was a good thing that the terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule.
Either way, it was funny to see him react to people clapping when they weren't suppose to.
Tom Shales, who has been very forgiving and kind to the President, especially after 9/11, had a pretty harsh review of the speach in today's Washington Post. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A33872-2004Jan21.html)
I liked this part of Shales' review: "Over on the Fox News Channel, Fred Barnes, sounding as if he had walking pneumonia, allowed as how he'd heard George W. Bush deliver many an important and eloquent speech over the years, "and this was not one of them." It takes courage to say something like that on the Fox News Channel, normally a Bush cheering section."
The smugness is what always gets me about this President - even when he occasionally stumbles onto something I might agree with, when I see that smirk I am reminded of my more over-riding opinion of him.
And talk about ball-less - all the hoopla about the missions to the moon and mars last week, and he sees some polls showing that conservatives were pissed, and suddenly he is stone silent on it. Naturally the hypocrites around him will spin it whatever way they want to, but they were the same nit wits who never tired of accusing President Clinton of checking everything out with the opinion polls first.

This is both an embarrassing kneejerk reaction and a tremendous logical reach for you.
I would think most people here understand what the marriage amendment talk is all about. I would HOPE so - I would hope most people here are that realistic as to know what's truly going down here.
It's nothing more than an issue that Bush is giving to his supporters. He's throwing a bone to his base, something to appease them over the bad taste left in their mouth over the immigration & medicare policies.
Do you know what it would take to pass such an amendment? You're a smart person, and probably civil-minded, so I'm sure you do: it would have to be passed by a 2/3rds majority of both houses of Congress as well as ratified by 3/4ths (roughly 38 out of the 50) of the states before it became part of the law of the land.
Bush knows, as well as many, that the marriage amendment (should it ever really see the light of day) will NEVER make it that far. It WILL NOT HAPPEN. He knows this; which is why he can come out and support it, because he knows that should it ever materialize it'll be dead in the water from the very beginning.

That's not what the phrase "will of the people" means and you know it. It does not imply a 100% belief, and it certainly doesn't imply that any in disagreement are not human. (Btw, using your logic would dictate that any straight person who supports gay marriage is also inhuman- why didn't you include that?)
I know you're smarter than this and so I'm very disappointed to see you being so purposely obtuse.
---
To follow up on Seven's point, the whole "marriage" debate right now is mainly a semantic one, which is why I think a constitutional amendment is unnecessary overkill. One side seems to simply want to reserve the use of the term "marriage" to a union between a man and a woman. However, many on that side are also supportive of allowing a legal civil union between people, both hetro- and homo-sexual, which would be essentially leaglly equivalent to marriage.
I wonder then, if we're moving toward a point where "marriages" will be purely ceremonial and religious events stripped of legal significance, and everyone will have to get a legal civil union either apart from or in conjunction with the marriage.

It seems like we're already there.
Well, at least it does to me.
I guess I'm pretty "anti-marriage" because of this attitude.

I wonder then, if we're moving toward a point where "marriages" will be purely ceremonial and religious events stripped of legal significance, and everyone will have to get a legal civil union either apart from or in conjunction with the marriage.
It seems like we're already there.
Tell that to anyone the courts ordered to give half of thier stuff to thier ex, or had thier bank accounts frozen and wages garnished over it.
There's no reason why homosexuals shouldn't be forced to suffer like the rest of us.

Well, actually, that's what I meant.
Marriage has been stripped down so much to the basic legality of the issue that it seems wholly seperate from the ceremony/union I assume it used to mean. It's just a business transaction now. Something new to check off on the tax sheet, and not much more.

Oh, sorry. when I read "Legal Civil Union" I was thinking of the one they gave Homosexuals here in Jersey, which, form what I understand, doesn't have all the legal hangups to get out of it that a legal "marrage" has.
But I'm sure the lawyers will find a way to make money off this one too... they always do.
after all, once they've made "enough" they become politicians, and figure out ways to take more away from us working schlubs...

I was watching footage from Melissa Etheridge's wedding on ABC the other night. It's refreshing to see that gay people dance as awkwardly as straight people do at wedding receptions.

Probably someone looking to cash in; maybe the Pope's lawyer.
Just remember that our great leader wants to preserve the "sanctity" of that institution for as long as possible...
