Over 24 hrs? That's usually well past the failure spike; I have a feeling it tipped/fell.
I didn;t read how strong the 'noise' was coming in; full strength noise would ta least be good news, meaning something is at least transmitting; but the Martian weather blows, literally, and maybe a gust just f-ed it up.
[EDIT: Ok, sounds like maybe full-strength noise, but alas still noise... wonder what the hell happened...]
ugh.

No single explanation considered so far fits all of the events observed, Theisinger said. When the team tried to replicate the situation in its testing facility at JPL, the testbed rover did not have any trouble communicating. Two of the possibilities under consideration are a corruption of flight software or corruption of computer memory, either of which could leave Spirit's power supply healthy and allow adequate time for recovering control of the rover.
It always comes down to some software fuckup don't it? Billions of dollars down the drain.

Hope isnt lost yet, they have a few options, like rebooting it. It couldnt have fallen into anything because there was no depressions near it, and it was only within 20 feet of the lander. Im pretty confidant that they will get it running again. Meanwhile, its twin is set to land on Saturday on the other side of the planet. Incidentally, the crater that its in is the size of Connecticut!

Well to be honest I think there may be several things that the scientists may be over/under-compensating for....electro-magnetic forces of the planet might be alot more different.
And I find it funny how the last rover found evidence of water and/or ice on the planet and then it suddenly stopped broadcasting.
I know alot of people are saying why should we be checking out Mars when Earth is in alot of trouble as it is. But think about this...if Mars is able to support life how incredible is that? Billions upon Billions of stars and star systems and the one planet closest to us can be habitated.
I think it is important to find this out, not just for us for today but for the people 20-50 years from now who may be actually heading there.
I just hope I will be alive to see someday mankind going to Mars.

if Mars is able to support life how incredible is that? Billions upon Billions of stars and star systems and the one planet closest to us can be habitated.
FUN MARS FACTS:
The average surface temperature on Mars is -81 farenheit.
Composition of the atmosphere (by volume)
95.3% carbon dioxide
2.7% nitrogen
1.6% argon
0.13% oxygen
remainder: traces of water vapor, neon, krypton, xenon
so you see not only is it fucking freezing there, even superman couldn't live there. maybe in a couple billion years it would happen. but besides why would we as a species want to return to our home planet that was wiped out when the meteor hit and created the Valles Marineris and wiped out those of us who didn't make it out. all this information was kept in the archives of man but have yet to be discovered on the home planet.

> What is 'really' the goal here. Is it really to see if it's 'livable' or to see if there 'was' or 'is' life on Mars. If there is no life on our moon why would there be life on Mars? You'd think they would just concentrate on making 'habitable facilities' on the moon. Wouldn't the conditions be more tolerable?
It's hard not to question "what are the true benefits"? One of these rovers cost near 1 billion dollars. If you go buy a new car or appliance and it starts breaking down or 'don't work' you would be upset.

You'd think they would just concentrate on making 'habitable facilities' on the moon. Wouldn't the conditions be more tolerable?
Yes, in terms of proximity.
Before we even begin to think about a real mission to mars we gotta re-invent the whole 'peeps landing on, walking on, buggying around on, and taking off from the moon' thing.
Moon's a 3 day trip with Apollo-era technology; Mars? Depending of how the celestial spheres rotate? sheeesh most say 18 months is needed for that type of round trip + some real exploring time.
Before taking that 'giant leap' I'd say a permanent moon dwelling of some sort; if for nothing else but as a way station and training facility for the crews that finally Do take the trip.
And one of the major barriers, barring some as-not-yet realized way to put them in 'suspended animation' or whatever like all the real sci-fi movies [like Rocket Man] do, will be dealing with 18 months of mission.
Let's play pretend for a moment, for fun for the thread.
Let's assume 18 months for sake of arguement. Let's assume the craft they finally send to mars has a crew of six.
And let's say the size of the 'crew quarters' of this craft are as big as a two story, four bedroom, 2.5 bath home. For simplicity; you know, a central kitchen, sleeping rooms, couple of bathrooms, couple of room for misc stuff.
Q: How would YOU do?
Meaning. That Crew Quarters is where you will spend a year and a half with three other people in that craft with that much space. And, except for the time you are on Mars, that's it. Can't step outside, can't run out to grab a burger, and distances where you saying "Hello, Nasa?" and you getting a response might be [ i forget the real numbers] 20 mins? more?
Simply put, will they go batshit?

Alright!
I checked the three news networks' sites, and it's still too new, but I was watching on CNN, and apparently not only has Spirit's condition been downgraded from "critical" to "serious", it's apparently also moving again, AND the second rover managed to touch down.
Score two for NASA!

I would like the see the dawn of man on Mars. However, I've read recently that even if we are to send a man there, it would probably be a one way trip. We couldn't transport enough fuel there to get us back.
Makes ya think twice, but hey, it'd be a fun game of find the astronaut for the next men who went.

NASA Loses Contact With Spirit Rover
Of course Richard Hoagland predicted all this before it happened on Art Bell's show.
He said some sinister forces would send bogus signals to the thing to get it to fall off a cliff or something, if it looked like it was going to discover something.
This was on the show right after the landing where he claimed to see a Martian waffle iron and a piece from a Martian car engine....
