I can't believe kids were actually disciplined for this.
And then they wonder why these things make the news. All they needed to do was take the fliers down and say, "Our fault, that's not what we meant." And the kid who's actually African gets suspended.... nice.
---
Reminds me of a management professor I had in college. He's a big guy, lily-white, and speaks with a British accent. So, we all figure he's from England. So, one day in talking about not taking appearances at face value, he announces "I'm African-American." Chuckles are heard throughout the room. "No, really. My father was a British diplomat and I was born in Nigeria. I'm African." (Then they moved to the US.)
Not his fault the term African-American doesn't specify black.

How do you define African American?
I don't.
But that said, I am still confused. On a form like a census, where people have to select their race, you can pick "black" or "white"...but then something like "Asian"...no other "colors" like the first two. What's what? I'm so fucking mixed up now...
EVERYONE JUST KEEP FUCKING UNTIL WE FIND THE MIDDLE GROUND.

I believe the problem stems from black people (American people with ties to African slaves) not wanting to be categorized by color alone. Plus it lumps a lot of people into one group. The term African American is an attempt to recognize, or invent depending on who you talk to, our culture and ethnicity.

What's the point of insisting on a literal translation of a term because you don't like it? The term "American" refers to citizens of the US or inhabitants of North or South America. But when we use it as only the first denotation we aren't misusing the term; we aren't any more or less correct. So the term isn't a perfect literal description of the people it's supposed to define. Most of language is just as imperfect. Stop using the term as an excuse to bitch about other people and get on with your lives.

That's oversimplifying the whole thing.
To me, the social differences between "black" and "African-American" are astronomical. They are NOT compatible in the same situations, and their continued mutal "official" existence causes more confusion than just "an excuse to bitch." It's wholly inconsistent with many other racial distinctions in this country. I'm saying we simply need to be consistent. How hard would it be to be more specific on something like a census? "African American, Asian American, European American, Latin American"...whatever. Maybe it just makes sense to me.

I dont see what the confusion is. First of all, if you're not black, or from Africa, what possible problem could this terminology cause you? The Census Bureau can deal with clarifying the classifications on forms. I've never had a problem using either "black" or "african american" terms. This is about white people who have a problem with black people defining themselves differently. They want to pretend that blacks have never been treated differently in America, are only treated differently now because they act differently, and that if they just adapted to some homoginized idea of mainstream American culture then issues of race and identity will just go away. It's ridiculous.

I'm not saying this is a "black issue."
I'm saying this is simply an issue of offical consistency. It's no wonder we have so little sense of ANY kind of nationl unity when we have no idea what the fuck any of us are. And I'm hardly trying to make everyone the same, because we're not. We have different social identities, and we should be proud of them, and part of that is establishing what the hell they are in the first place. People want to use "black"? Fine. Want to use "African American"? I'm supposed to care? I'm simply stating that in the "official" sense, they're NOT the same thing. It unecessarily creates a seperate racial identity when we're already neck-deep in confusion about what ANY of us are.
I'm looking at it from a practical sense, you're seemingly taking it as an emotional one. We're not going to get anywhere that way. No, those particular racial distinctions don't effect me, but if it ends up eventually become an actual political mess, it COULD effect me. It's just completely unecessary, that's all. It'll create more problems (Most of them just annoying and minor) then any good it could possibly do, if any.
And why the hell should toss out any attempts at order or consistency just because it makes people "feel good?"
I'm not saying that we all have to be the same, because we're obviously not. Why can't the SYSTEM OF DISTINCTIONS just be the same? Some people classified by color, some by race. How does that help anything? There should be a universal basic standard that at least breaks us down before we get into specifics, but we don't even have that. It's monumentally halfassed, and any attempts to try and simply streamline it are ignored at the risk at offending people who aren't really being offended by ANYTHING.
I don't know about you, but if I have to start dealing with "Bavarian Americans" or something, I'm taking it out on you.

I'm trying to understand what you're saying. Is it: That in creating the racially identifying term "African-American," which uses a geographic term, it interferes with geographic classifications used for census work and the like, in coming to an understanding of who we are as a whole?
If so then we're talking about two different things.
In relation to the act of white kids making a public display of their objections to a black award by using the overlap between racial and gegraphic terminology, the terminology issue is just an excuse to make a point about their objection to what they see as a racial preference. Theirs was a political/racial statement, not the more academic one I think you're making.
That's my opinion anyway, but I think the objective fact in all this is that it's getting more pointless with each post and cutting into my Southern-Mongolian-American-by-way-of-St. Kitts & Nevis porn time.
