View Full Version : What's your favorite "one album only" band?

OK, everyone knows these...bands that put out a single awesome album, and then either break up, or someone dies, and the band is no more and that one album ends being the band's debut AND swangsong. These are NOT one hit wonders, because sometimes they don't even have a
being a cult or forgotten classic.
I bring this up because I just picked a great old skool hip-hop album by this MC named Charizma and produced by the now-well respected "indie" hip-hop DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, back when he was just getting started.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000E69HW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The album was actually done at least 10 years ago, but signing hang ups kept it from getting released, and Charizma tragically died in the early 90's. It's been the stuff of hip-hop bootleg legend, at least out west in the Bay Area, and now it's finally OFFICIALLY out, and it stands as the one thing Charizma laid to wax. It's clearly dated (Think Slick Rick/De La Soul), but it's a great, excellently-made hip-hop party album, something that's sorely lacking these days. So that's why these "one album only" acts are on my mind.
And these are the only studio albums created by these artists while they were still together/alive. Comps, live albums and B-sides/demo collections that came out after the fact don't count.
Here are two of my big ones...

The 3 I think of off the top of my head are...
1. GTR - A one off featuring guitarists Steve Howe of YES and Steve Hackett of GENESIS. Came out in '87 (I think) and is out of print, although I hear it was rereleased not that long ago.
2. OYSTERHEAD "The Grand Pecking Order" - A side project that comprised of Les Claypool (PRIMUS) on bass/vocals, Trey Anastacio (PHISH) on guitar/vocals, and Stewart Copeland (The POLICE) on drums. Came out a few years ago.
3. AUDIOSLAVE - The imfamous RAGE/ Chris Cornell album from last year. Yeah, there may be more in the future, but for now, there is just the one.
Take it easy Clarky

OK, with Audioslave brought up, let's keep it to bands that are officialy not existing anymore. Otherwise we could add on hundreds of debut albums from the last 2-3 years.

History escapes me here as well as my memory but I believe while touring in support of their then soon to be released album there was a car accident in their station wagon where two of the members died. This was a really good record from what i remember. I need a refresher.
Checking out a breif bio here, I did not realise they were from Gainesville, FLA, home of some other truly great bands that virtually no one has ever heard. I really need to go back and listen. They were from back in the days when Radon ruled the town.
Second was one of my all time favorites, Mother Love Bone. Not sure if it really counts here because there was an EP called Shine but the first full length Apple (which has a few of the Shine songs on it) was just great. There was a later compilation of Shine and Apple called Stardog Champion. After the death of lead vocalist Andrew Wood due to a heroin overdose (which I still remember reading about in Metal Edge on my way home from High School and then the subsequent depression) the rest of the band went on to do whatever. I have NO idea. A shame, what a bunch of wasted talent.

The first record that came to mind was Jeff Buckley. Thats an amazing record. Also The Souls-a band that came out of England about 6 or 7 years ago. I dont even think they ever did a major tour.

Snot; if you don't know them go out and buy it. They will probably reman my favorite band of all time, which'll be odd when i'm old.
Mother Love Bone, someone mentioned them already but they definitely great.
And don't for get a great great band that only had one album: BLIND FAITH.
Oh, and i almost forgot about another great one album band: Human Waste Project; check them out, they were really good.

Everything that springs to mind has aleady been mentioned...mmmm...will have to ruminate, brood and ponder this for awhile.
I keep coming up with bands like Let's Active and Hoodoo Gurus who put out 2 or 3 records.

As for Wilburys, ESD is right, they had at least two actual albums.
And sorry, snoogans, but the last Jimmy Eat World album was actually their third. Fourth, if you count the full-length singles/EP collection they put out. And this thread was about your FAVORITE "one album only" bands...put down that damn tweed.

anyway, i DID give my favorite, drowning pool, and i hope that they didnt have some other album before that.
truth is, im sure i like one more, but i could care less how many albums bands have, so i dont know if any of these bands have more. i only heard of one. so drowning pool, i think every other band i listen to is good enough they had more than one

It's not really a "good enough" thing. This is even less of a "side project" thing. It's more bands or artists who either broke up too soon and went on to other things before their album took off, or someone tragically died before they had a chance to reach what their potential hinted at, which I guess applies to your feelings towards Drowning Pool.
A shitty band that puts out a lone album and nothing else is just a shitty band with a shitty album, and the album doesn't belong here.

I just like the idea of snoogs forever being trapped in a record store, looking for newer albums by some band of his that put out one and then vanished, all because he's so determined to know as little as possible about everything. One that comes to mind was Mad Season, with Layne Staley on vocals, Mike McCready from Pearl Jam on guitar and two other guys. Also, Temple of the Dog which a combo of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam before PJs 1st album came out.
And I saw it come up a couple times, but the Travelling Wilburys put out 2 albums but as a joke they called the 2nd album "Vol 3". And didn't Jeff Buckley have a 2nd album? Something like "Songs for my sweetheart the drunk" or something like that. It might've been released after he died.

The second Buckley album came out after he died.
It wasn't finished.

I'm neglecting the formers(Lint: King of Ska, Block Party, 69 Newport and the like) Due to the fact that most, if not all songs were released onto Energy and then they disbanded.

Though there's forty different bootlegs, crappy concerts, and alternate takes and sessions, there was still only one official album.

I'm no expert on the Modern Lovers, but I think you're wrong on this, at least if you include the Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers releases.

I think the Traveling Wilbury's actually put out three albums- but maybe that's the drugs talking.
They put out two albums "Volume 1" and "Volume 3"...Orbison had a heart attack and keeled over a couple weeks after "Volume 1" came out...so really, the original lineup of the Traveling Wilburys put out only 1 album...

-Life, Sex, and Death- Album is called The Silent Majority. A band from 1992 that had a lead singer who dressed up as a geek with glasses. The only "hit" they had was called "Fuckin' Shit Ass".
-Sausage- Les Claypool's side project from 1994 was actually the original version of Primus. The album was called Riddles are Abound Tonight.

I think "The Great Rock n Roll Swindle" was an official Sex Pistols release, so I'm not sure if they truly only had one album.

Most albums put out like that are "official". But it's not a "real release". It's just an odds and sods collection of early tracks, covers, demos, remixes and the like.
I'm talking true albums, through and through.

This is not a Sex Pistols album even though their name is on it. It was the creation of Malcom McLaren (guy who pretty much created the SP). Aside from some solo stuff by Johnny Rotten & Sid Vicious and other band members it's mostly crap. There's only one song out of 23 that is actually credited to the Sex Pistols (Rotten isn't on vocals and it sounds like a watered down version...no make that hosed down version of the Pistols)) and that's the title track. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a superfan or you have some money that you don't need.

I think that "Swindle" has some really good stuff on it. "Friggin' in the Riggin'" and "Who Killed Bambi?" are great.

Besides the Great - Mother Love Bone, we should not forget the tribute album...
Temple of the Dog, with Chris Cornell and pretty much the entire line-up of what would soon be Pearl Jam.
