View Full Version : Curious about nervous breakdowns

What are nervous breakdowns all about? I could always do an internet search, but I prefer to take it up here.
I'm not having a nervous breakdown or anything, but I got to thinking about the concept the other day. I was walking down the street and something came into my mind that gave me anxiety (I don't even remember what), but it was weird because it felt like the emotion crossed a certain line, and I had to stop myself...it was like "wow, what just happened?" In a way it felt like something broke inside me.
So that got me wondering about what goes on when you have a nervous breakdown - when you just break inside and can't snap out of it.

I've never witnessed anyone having one but have had friends or acquaintances that supposedly did. It seems like a person is unable to cope with the emotions that come along with being hurt 'emotionally' and probably feeling like a 'failure' and it overwhelms them. They lose any shred of 'self-confidence' and become helpless. One of my good friends moved to Florida with his young wife, he cheated and she fell apart.
One time my Dad told my older brother to do the dishes and my older brother almost had a nervous breakdown. My dad just told him to "shadup'... That was actually kind of funny...

Could be several reasons.
A forgotten traumatic experience sometime in your life may come back via something that "triggers" it for you to experience the same feelings of when the trauma actually happened.
The gradual build up of negative experiences/feelings being suppressed that eventually overwhelm you. (Think of a little crack in a dam and how it eventually will burst if something is not done to maintain the stability of it)
Or maybe even a chemical imbalance in the brain that may inhibit with how you cope or deal with everyday life and other things.
Damn.....too much thinking for 4:30 in the a.m. No wonder my head is spinning now.

If you really want an answer, imagine your reaction of your loved one dying. The helpless, unable to cope or accept, or believe, feeling that overtakes you, preventing you from functioning. Some of us are softer than others, some far harder. To some, like mentioned above, have a breakdown at the thought of doing dishes, others, it usually takes a more traumatic significant event. People like me have alot of anxiety, and are more prone to inaction when faced with a stressfull situation. Ive had panic attacks, and can tell you that the feeling is so bizzarre and frightining that fortunatly for me, I recognised it for what it was and used some techniques I learned to bring myself down.
