I'd say Yes, she was. Sad, perhaps she sucks so bad now.

I have some old Carson shows on tape; and you should see the early stand-ups by Rosanne Barr and Joan Rivers [and many others] who were still hungry and focused on being funny as hell for five minutes forThe Tonight Show, as opposed to being famous, or phoning in a stand-up.

Tough to remember such a time existed, but I have Rosanne on Carson doing a five minute routine that literally blew the roof off the place. She killed. No one knew who this chubby gum-chewer was, but she had a bit about life with her husband that had them laughing for five solid minutes. Just blow you away funny; like Dangerfield did on Carson; 40 on-liners, and he kills on 30+.


Ditto with Joan; a different shtick, but she was edgy and current and hungry. And for a time, I believe, Carson's number one fill-in, for a time at least. She was good for the spot, for a while. Was.

I forget what happened exactly, but she pissed off the Carson camp, and Johnny made the call, no more Joan. And when Carson says a person doesnt do the show anymore; they don't.

That and a husband jumping to his death, I guess, and a few dozen plastic surgeries will change a person.

And gotta agree with Too Cute; way too early Joan. For Many, going all the way back to Howdy Doody, the Captain was The Man.

I was trying to explain this to someone. Here's what I said. 'Captain Kangaroo was as famous as any actor in Hollywood.' And they were like, No Way!

I said, If 'fame' was measured as a factor of familiarity to people. Meaning: I would wager that the likeness of CK on TV is as familiar as that of any actor on any screen. And there's an argeument for CK being Way More popular then any movie star.

Too Cute is right again.

Imagine going from Top Tonight Show Guest Host for Carson to asking people what they are wearing.

I read 'The Late Shift' twice but I'm blanking out on what happened between her and Johnny. And also I forget exactly, but I think for a time she was at least in the running for being Carson's replacement. Long odds maybe, but she may have been on the short list.

That type of fall from Fame makes Jon Cryer's career post 'pretty in pink' look like a Rocket Blastoff.

Right. She was the permanent guest host for Carson, and actually got better ratings than he did. She was funny. Then she saw a list of possible replacements if/when Carson retired (as he was always threatening to do). She wasn't on the it.

So when FOX offered her her own show, she agreed, and told Carson before the announcement. Carson had a hissy fit and a temper tantrum.

The FOX show wasn't that good, mainly because her husband Edgar was the executive producer, was a control freak, and didn't know how to produce a talk show.

She then had her own daytime talk show for something like 5 years. That when she turned into what she is today.

She also had a radio talk show on WOR in NY (and syndicated) for several years. Suprisingly, her political views are conservative.
