Do you get snow-days?
This isn't for you people still in school, I'm talking to the working class. Does your job give you days off when the snow dumps on us?

Mine doesn't. I have to use earned leave if i don't come in.

Doing contract work, any day I don't go in I don't get paid. Usually with the government, it has to be a crippling storm for them to let people off with paid leave.

my last job would close CONSTANTLY if there was more than 3 inches of snow - it was a huge corporation in westchester and people commuted in from as far away as pennsylvania. that rocked, i got 4-5 snow days a year, along with a bunch of early closings and delayed openings. if they didn't close, sometimes i could pull the "i'm a scared girl who is afraid of driving in the snow" bit and get the day off. they had a phone number to call into every morning where you could get the "snow announcement".

there was one time, however, where i glanced outside and saw snow and called into work and left my boss a message that said "i'm plowed in and the roads look really bad, im gonna stay in today". when i then woke up at noon and looked outside, we had only gotten an inch. they never even brought it up to me but i was paranoid for weeks after that id be fired for it

my new job is also a large corporation (in jersey) and apparently they do close up once in a while, but i'm still a contractor here and don't get paid if i don't come in, so i'll actually be not happy if we close for this next big storm cause i wont get paid.

We don't get snow days, but I have about 4 weeks of personal / vacation time that I can use. I also have a laptop so I can work from home on snowy days. So I take advantage of that as much as possible during bad weather.

My company shuts down all the time, they're so terrified of lawsuits from people getting hurt to or from work. The hourly employees only get paid if they show up and are sent home...anyone else just loses out unless they use personal time. Except for us managers. We still get paid.

Yeah, it's pretty unfair.

Ahhhh, shucks...as much as I would love to take credit for something, it's all yerdaddy's fault. (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/71/Topic/32844/currentpage/13/page/redirect.htm#bottom) He's the fucking best!

Last night I went to this Moroccan Restaurant in downtown DC (world famous establishment, with some shady business dealings!) We all got there about 7pm, and when we left at 10:30 it was like we had been in there for much longer, the way it looked outside.

Shit...the drive home back to Virginia was HORRIBLE (I think I'm the only one Virginia without an SUV), right when the worst of it was coming down. Pretty fun, though.

My company does not require anyone to come into to work if they don't feel safe driving. Of course, one has to make up the time. I just took a week vacation to Arizona and used up all my vacation, so I can't use that. I'm probably going to have to work Saturday.

Just think of the all the Virginians who drive SUVs that had about 5 years without a real storm. They were just toolin' around in overpriced minivans.

Well, it's good to know that I'm not the only one SUVless. Back in 1999 I thought about moving out of NoVA because, not only did I not have an SUV, but I wasn't working at a dot com start-up, and I was sure both were needed to stay in the Commonwealth.

Just think of the all the Virginians who drive SUVs that had about 5 years without a real storm. They were just toolin' around in overpriced minivans.

Yeah...it all happened after the blizzrd of 96 that shut the city and the government down for about a week (I remember it well because it was the week I fell in love with Windy Reiger on Channel 4, as she manned the snow-desk...OH! And it was also when I proposed to the girlfriend, which then last 4 more months...another story...) and right after that EVERYONE got their big fat 14 mile per gallon SUVs, and then a good 5 years of nothinig!

PAH!

I always get a bit of uppity satisfaction when I see an SUV stuck on the side of the road; especially one of those silly Lexus or Mercadis models.

Yeah we get snow days. When we expect snow we try to cover a days worth of work the day before.
Like on Sunday some staff came in to visit people with meds. for Monday in anticipation of snow. But never happened.
Today (Monday), reports of ice and snow for Tuesday and Wednesday, so we covered people for meds and outreaches until Thursday in the event of the bad weather.

When we had the last snow storm last week (or the week before), we covered ourselves for the next day but the director never made the call to shut down. Let's just say alot of people were pissed (what good is preparing a day ahead if you don't make the call to shutdown). But they let us out at 2 p.m.

One of the bad things about living literally a hundred feet from work is that I'm always expected to make it in when it's snowing heavily. Also, I'm the guy that they call to open/close the store if nobody else can make ir in or they need to leave early.

That's because these shit heads don't know how to drive in the snow and they try to do 80 on the highways. Here's a tip, people, yes SUVs get better traction, but they can't stop on a dime in those road conditions.

My boss rocks!

I have no objections to you all taking home work in case you're snowed in and Wiley opts to open on schedule (or late). Of course if you carry the work home, and call in tomorrow to find that and Wiley is closed . . . go out and play (by all means). But if we're open and you've got work at home, just e-mail me your agenda and I'll consider the day a work-at-home.

If we're open, I'll be in the office no matter what since I live so close.

From and email at 1:35 from my office manager:

"It has come to my attention that the Federal Government has elected to send their employee's home four(4) hours early in consideration of a tough rush hour (weather condition wise that is).

There is no doubt a potential for the roads to get bad as temperatures begin to drop.

You should use the same judgement that got here (within the sound of my voice) to decide if you should leave early. Such decisions should be coordinated with your supervisor.

The same policies apply in these instances as if you woke up to snow. Vacation and personal time (in 4 hour increments) can be used.

Arrangements for making up lost time should also be coordinated with your supervisor."
