Call me crazy but that does not look bad at all. I will always like what Kevin Smith does. I mean I could observe what he produces in the toilet and be entertained. I am such a sucker for the heartfelt story. The romantic comedy if you will.

Looks fine by me. Looks like he's headed back into "Chasing Amy" territory. The guy is a strong enough screenwriter that people shouldn't expect him to rely on the crutches of Jay & Silent Bob and "dick 'n' fart jokes" for the rest of his career.

Dick and fart jokes are great and it is good to see one escape from that and do a serious (somewhat) film.

OK, look at it this way...

I think the preview for this movie stinks. If you have any of his other films on DVD, go and watch the trailers for his first three (And best) films. They're AWFUL. Based on those, you'd think the man created the worst, most unfunny films ever put to celluoid. So in terms of Kevin Smith, the less promising the trailer, the better the movie.

Go with it.

It's about as serious as "Amy".

He's been here already.

Plus, he's basing much of it on his own feelings about being a father. In Jersey. How is this NOT "being himself?"

He's just finally leaving the stupid burnout stoner fucks behind.

And she dies.

Settle down.

And since when hasn't Smith made fucked up casting choices that end up paying off? Yeah, I'm sure everyone was behind having guys like Jason Lee, Affleck and Mewes in the first few films.

I don't want Half Baked over and over and over and over and over.

Like a cable knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting.

I can understand though if you want to pack one and BURN! Then the fart jokes are great. There is a serious aspect to ones life which I believe that Kevin tries to embrace with this film.

There are plenty out there who are still making the stoner hit of the year. The campy comedy if you will. Just some people grow out of it.

I'm not trying to pick Snoogans, you are still one of my favorites. Keep on antagonizing Wadd, that makes for some great reading.

Kevin truly believes that this is the greatest movie he's ever made, he absolutly loves the film. I've liked everything else he's ever done and if he likes it then I'm happy with that. I want to trust his judgement. I've seen the trailer and I think it's gonna be a fantastic movie. You're gonna see a perofrmance out of Affleck that will blow you away, I'm telling you he's going to be that good. Give the movie a chance don't just hate on it because it's not a "jay & silent bob" flick.

look, it can be referred to as a dramity, and it's hard enough to pull of a good drama, much less throwing comedy in the mix.

i think he is a good comedy director. the over-drawn dialogs that bounce all over the place work. the quirky plot lines work. this looks sappy and corny.

Of course not. I love 'em. But Smith himself has said he never expected to use those characters that long, and the thought of doing nothing but movies with that same circle the "Jersey Universe" was starting to get to him.

Exactly. He offically ended the "Jersey Trilogy" with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He wanted to end his series of movies with Those two characters popping up all the time. <b>So his first film that is outside the "Viewaskewniverse" is "Jersey Girl" staring Ben Affleck.</b>

So the only he gave up is being in the film himself and not talking (well not all the time, Silent Bob always seemed to start talking!)

And who else is in Jersey Girl?

Jason Lee, who has been in all Kevin's movies except Clerks. Played two people in J&SBSB (same as Ben Affuck)

Matt Damon, Wow with Ben Affleck for the 4 time in a Kevin smith film

Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler as a couple. Jesus I thought Kevin Smith was a good writer (and an <i>okay</i> director)

Spoiler:<font color=white>Jenifer Lopez dies early in the film</font>, so it's a feel good movie! (that "spoiler" got me banned from www.newaskew.com's talkback section, yeah, I'm lame)

I'm a Kevin Smith fan, I've liked or loved his past 5 films. I'll give this one a chance. The trailer makes it look stupid, but that's just the trailer. I'll trust Kevin on this one, but if it sucks, I'm not there for the next film (Fletch Won)

I am not really excited to see this movie. I was because I'm a huge Kevin Smith Fan, but I think that may have ended when he ended the Viewaskewneverse (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ends with God closing the book on those movies)

Doesn't this movie come out soon? I haven't heard much recently except Kevin cut Benifer's wedding scene and Kevin doesn't think it'll reach #1 at the Box Office.

I might check out the Clerks Animated movie, but Jersey Girl might be the first Kevin Smith film I don' see in a theater.

You can't possibly give a shit about the relationship he forms with Liv Tyler because they never really show how it came about. I thought it was good. I agree with Lisa about not fully understanding the relationship ben had with liv, i think it was too open-ended. However, I think Kevin wrote a great film (much better than any of us could have written) about a personal issue in his life and its something I really respect. Was it my favorite Kevin Smith film? No. But did I enjoy it and do I plan on making it part of my DVD collection? Yes. Go see it if you have the time, and be your own judge.

No, his "winning formula" is his "casual dialogue"...namely when people are just hanging out discussing something. The crass shit is just secondary. There are plenty of scenes in "Jersey Girl" where he drops the whole "feelgood" bit and just has people doing the "casual dialogue" thing and it feels right at home.

He's definitely got some more great films in him. "Jersey Girl" is not one of them...but it's good enough.

I'm a huge Kevin Smith Fan. Well I was.

I was fine with Ben Affleck sucking, but when George Carlin was at the bar and said "I don't want to die alone" That was it.

Now my nit picks:

1)Why didn't Ben know that street was closed? didn't he just have a town meeting about the water main? Then he said J Lo was making it hard on him from beyond the grave?

2) What straight man could resist Liv Tyler like that? She was throwing herself at him and it took Ben that long to go for it? Stupid prick!

This movie was made for Kevin Smith's Dad, who died in 2003. Did Kevin Smith's mom die in child birth or was that just something he thought would make for a good date movie?

I was once a Kevin Smith fan, but have drifted far, far away from that over the years.

Clerks was brilliant - and it all began to go downhill from there. Talk about the law of diminishing returns...

I saw it this evening with my friends. Ir wasn't that bad-- but I think the fact that Ben and J-Lo were in it ruined it for me. My favorite part was when he said he wasn't a whore-monger... what a contradiction! Overall, I enjoyed it, although we cracked jokes through the entire movie. It wasn't no, Chasing Amy or Clerks-- that's for sure.

I personally liked it but I missed Jay, it wasn't as good as the others but I thought Clerks sucked the first time around. I recommend it if you are a Kevin Smith fan and your loving husband won't take you to go see the passion of the Christ!! I guess that's what best friends are for, isn't it?

Kevin Smith must have learned a few things by watching "Jerry Maguire" and a few John Hughes movies about doing a formula comedy drama, which is a tip off that "Jersey Girl" has been done before. Just change the star (Ben 'the incubus' Affleck) and the love interest (Liv Tyler is pretty ) and the setting (my digs in Jersey) and get a really sweet kid to play the daughter (Rachel Castro is adorable and the kids in the theater loved her) and it can be a very appealing movie. Smith wrote and directed a good movie, a loveletter to his daughter (and late dad Don) with a good supporting cast and excellent lensing by Vilmos Zsigmond (the greatest DP ever).

Stop me if you get it..Ollie Trinke falls for Gertrude Steiney (J-Lo for a small role) and before the opening credits...DIES...giving birth and leaving Ollie with a baby. He loses his big-ass job in NYC and moves in with his dad (George Carlin makes a very good actor in a big role, funny and serious). Ollie is stuck with a roadcrew job in Sandy Hook (yeah!) and little Gertie (Castro shines) is happy with daddy and pop-pop. You guess the rest (not hard).

"Jersey Girl" is not far off from "About a Boy" and it is a Smith movie because of the quick dialogue (unreal banter) and show biz in-jokes (Will Smith jumps in for a great cameo) and the gag setups work. The romance with Tyler is weak and stops the whole movie. Good effort though, good small roles with Jason (pie-f**ker) Biggs and Steven Root and Mike Starr. Let us not forget my electric cameo ( Browntown Johnny as background artist in hospital bed) that lights up the screen for 1 second (and then a computer monitor covers my face). Ben is Ok. J-Lo is Ok. Enjoy!

I think she judged it correctly in this case. Icky sounds right.

Here some other words for why it sucks: Sappy, unoriginal, pussified, forced, predictable, boring, lazy, Jason Biggs... I could go on.

I don't mind Ben in the movie, He's usually okay in Kevin Smith's films. Jason Biggs, George Carlin and the kid I do mind. As well as the super predictable "Guest Cameo" that change's Oillie Tinkie's life (Nice Character Name Kev! J Lo plays Gurtrude something)

And did you catch Jason Lee? WTF is with his hair?

Edit: Now I'm sure there are a lot worse movies I could have seen. And Kevin has never been the best director out there, or even the best writer (his characters never sounded natural, just way too wordy for the type of people they are supposed to be portraying, but they have been intresting in the past) but I expect more from Kevin. This is the kind of movie Randal and Dante would have made fun of ten years ago. I'm sure Kevin Smith wouldn't have thought he'd be making a film like this, but ten years is a while and he's changed, Film geeks like me will just look for other directors to be fans of.

Kevin is a nice guy (I met him once, and talked to him for a short time, he really is a good guy!) so I wish him well in his career.

I'll still check out the Clerk's Animated movie if that ever gets made.

(much better than any of us could have written)

don't ever say something as stupid as that. Kevin Smith is not some genius of screenwriting. He is lucky he has connections because i certainly don't think he'd be very sucessful if he didn't have Ben Affleck and Co. to fall back on. I like the guy and his movies but I know plenty of people who can write (yes, scripts) better than he can. I am bordering on saying I could write better, but i don't really like to say such things.

I don't think I'll see the movie because it just seems to be a typical romantic comedy. It just doesn't look very good. I hear Liv Tyler plays a sweet, quirky character like a "grinning idiot" and {psst} Ben Afffleck aint a very good actor. It seems decent but certaintly not worth 10 dollars. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" was earth-shattering though. Go see that.

yes i know, you and your "friends" (of which i'm sure you have many) can write much better. I can't wait to see some of your films when they open. be sure to let me know the dates and titles. can't wait for the next blockbuster. best of luck.

take a deep breath and tell me what was so earthshattering in what I just said. There are people that can write better than Kevin Smith. I know I just had to pick up my jaw. I just don't see the "genius" in his writing. He writes funny movies. It's amazing that you somehow concluded that I or somebody else that I know could not possibly have a film made. I could tell ya if one of my friends has a movie made if you really want but I don't think anyone would be satisfied. I wasn't bragging, merely saying that Kevin Smith is not a "genius of screenwriting". I guess I think too highly of people on the board to think that "jersey girl" was better written than anything anyone on this board could've done. Good writing lies in the eye of the beholder anyway. Good written movies wouldn't necessarilly succeed in the box office.

I'm gonna have to side with shamus. Please give us an example of the brillant Kevin Smith writing that has allowed him to produce all those blockbusters, oh wait! Kevin hasn't made one yet, his best film made $30.6 million (the one that also had the most death threats directed his way)

All Shamus said was that Kevin isn't the best writer, so the comment "Much better than any of us could have written" doesn't hold much water, especially for Jersey Girl: If I were the person who wrote Clerks, I'd be embarrassed as hell about Jersey Girl's script. I'm a Kevin Smith fan who has all of his DVDs, some signed, on my shelf. Jersey Girl will not be sitting next to them at any point.

I went and saw the film(adding to it's 8.5 million this weekend), and am being my own judge as you suggested. I might still give "Fletch Won" a chance, but who knows when that will happen.

First of all... Jersey Girl was a very well written story. There were quirks in the story just like any other movie. Was it the best film I've ever seen? No. Was it a good movie? Certainly.

What I don't understand is how anyone can say that Kevin Smith's career exists because of Ben Affleck and Co.... If anything it's the other way around.

I can see that it's trendy to jump on the Kevin Smith should have stuck to dick and fart jokes bandwagon... so you all have your fun with it. The bottom line is that Kevin Smith has the ability to convey relationships better than any screen writer of the last 10 years. The characters may have changed, but one thing remains constant when watching a View Askew film... you're going to get a glimpse into one man's view of how unique relationships dictate our every day lives.

Go ahead and bash the film. Go ahead and say you or other people could have written a better film. The bottom line is Kevin Smith is incredibly talented and while Jersey Girl might not be his best screenplay... it is by far the best movie he has made as a maturing film maker. It gives me hope that I will continue to see quality dialogue in the future and not be forced to swallow horse shit philosophy served up by the Wackowski brothers.

...and that's all I have to say about that.

that's pretty obvious, and I of course agree with it. I just don't see the people who post here writing something better.
I wasn't bragging, merely saying that Kevin Smith is not a "genius of screenwriting". I said I thought he "wrote a great film about a personal issue in his life and its something I really respect" I didnt catch the part where I said genius, that was something you threw in.

I only mean that that has helped him to get the "uber-director" reputation that he has today. He wouldn't in my opinion be so revered without ben affleck in his movies to bring them more legitimacy.

And what I'm saying to you Game is more positive to the board members and writers in general than negative towards Kevin Smith. By saying that Jersey Girl was better written than anything anyone on the board could've written I assumed that you were saying Kevin Smith was an excellent writer. I really don't think that.

Actually, Ben and Matt have a career because of Kevin Smith and Scott Moser.

They help get Good Will Hunting off the ground, and this is after Both Ben and Matt had been in a number of wide released movies: Dazed and Confused, Mistic Pizza, School Ties, and Smith's Mall Rats and Chasing Amy. Kevin didn't need Ben or Matt, they were friends.

It wasn't on my list of movies to see, but I took my daughter to see it. It really was a pretty good movie. The little girl, Raquel Castro, was very good and interacted well with Ben.
It's not a masterpiece by any stretch, but it's not a bad movie. Go see it...
