OK, so it's yet another in a long line of horrible, music journalist-coined genre labels, but I can't think of anything better.
This is the stuff that's rocking my world these days. Why? Well, because of the afore-mentioned rocking, and the simple fact that these groups make me wanna DANCE MY ASS OFF while they are doing said rocking.
Groups like Radio 4, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Hot Heat, The Rapture, Le Tigre, The Walkmen, Longwave, The Dismemberment Plan (RIP) and DC's own Q and Not You.
It's a simple premise...drop the funktastic bassline, get the classic early 80's NYC disco/hip-hop drumbeat, throw in the stabbing, angular guitars, and BAM! Bring it on the dance floor.
Of course, this is sort of a re-birth of this genre. It was big for about a second (Mostly just in NYC and London) in the early 80's before New Wave and hip-hop stole its thunder, and then it was known as "post-punk." Groups like Gang of Four, early P.I.L., ESG, The Slits, Liquid Liquid, DNA, Scritti Politti, Wire, The Fall, XTC and Girls Against Boys got it, and the gettin' was GOOD.
Anyone else know what I'm talking about? There's a few really, REALLY good comps that sum up this sound pretty fucking good, and pay respect to originators at the same time...
