I'm trying to remember the proper network protocol setting for a laptop that I'm setting up for someone at work. There's a special setting and I think it's DHCP but I can't remember, where if you set it, then someone who travels from location to location within the company would be able to login from anywhere and have access to the intranet, email etc. Does anyone know if it is DHCP, or is it another setting I would use? I know this is a bit of a techie question, but I'm stuck on this.

DHCP means that you can pick up an IP Address as long as the server is broadcasting one. The other option is static IP. You can check by going to the dos prompt and running ipconfig /all. It should tell you if Dhcp is enabled. If it is, and this is company wide then he should be able to get the internet from anywhere. As for Log-in, it really depends on server side setting such as roaming profiles and how the domain is set up. There are to many variables to give you a flat out answer.

Will this work if I have the command prompt and Windows 2000?

it should. go to the start button the run
type cmd in there. then once at the prompt ipconfig /all. this will see if it is dhcp, but will not tell you if he will be able to get email, that has to do with domain policy.
