View Full Version : Longevity of Computer On

Is it bad to leave your computer constantly running for several days? Does the fan burn out and burn up the hard drive? Since I'm so computer-illiterate, just curious. Usually,I leave mine on for about a day at most.

my pc is going on 5 years, and I've had it on constantly since I got dsl and then a cablemodem (2 years ago).
Some people say the jolt of on/off as well as the parts heating up/cooling off / heating up is worse for them.
Just keep the insides clean of dust.

ON most of the time, just turn it off if you're gonna be away from it for a long stretch, going away on vacation.....power spikes

I only turn it off if I'm gone more than two days. Otherwise, as someone said, it's more "harmful" to always be turning it on and off.

Leaving your computer on for long periods of time isn't going to hurt it one bit.
But, if you're still worried or want to save power you can go into the Power settings in Windows and tell the computer to turn off the hard drive/monitor or put your computer on stand by or hibernate.
Access all of these in the Power Settings. Either go to where you adjust your Screen Saver and go to the power settings on the bottom or go to the Control Panel and Power Settings.

about once a year i take the covers off, bring them outside, and use the leafblower on it. alot of dust gets built up inside and the leafblower does a nice job cleaning it out,,,

I believe it was the case a few years ago to leave your pc on constantly to avoid having your power supply burn out. However since then, they're made much better, or rather many of the more reputable computer manufacturers use better quality ones that allow you to either turn the pc on and off as needed or just leave it on.

When I built my system I got a top of the line power supply from PC Power and Cooling (http://www.pcpowercooling.com/), it works great and I turn my pc on and off every day without incident.

I wonder how many other people leave theirs on constantly because of that old fashioned idea? It uses power being on and your paying for that power and its more likely that unless you have a great surge protector or a ups, that sooner or later a spike of electricity or a power failure will fry your comp. Of course, a power spike can damage it even if off though. Id recommend turning it off when your not using it for more than a few hours.

I leave my comp on for months at a time. The amount of power consumered by a pc really isn't that high that it'll affect your bill, and I often have things running/downloading on it.
But I would recommend turning off your monitor when the pc is not in direct use, since that one consumes more power and generates more heat. Screen burn isn't an issue like it was years ago, though.

Thanks everybody. I wasn't sure if it was some cyber urban myth or what. I figured the monitor should be turned off like a TV. My PC is from 98,so I'm still not too sure how functional it would be after days of being on. I guess it wouldn't hurt if it ran for a few days on.

Yeah, what Jon said with turning off the monitor. That way you can leave off all those bullshit screensaver/power saver functions that lock up the computer and eat up memory.
And sr71, I haven't had a single power spike, and I'd say I've had this computer on most of the time after I bought it in early 1999.
Shit, I have an old computer.

I asked my friend who works in the electric side of the Utility this question;
If a computer was left on 24/7 --
365 days, how much would a typical system cost to keep on? Not that I do it, but some people I know says its "peanuts", but somehow, I dont think
so. Do you have some guide and cost figure?
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::
Her response;
A brand new computer left on 24 hrs a day pulls about $1.21 worth of electric daily.....that adds up if you do it all the time....not really peanuts
so ------- $1.21 x 365 = $ 441.65 a year.

Does this factor in shutting off the monitor or when the computer goes into power saver mode?
