Ok, so yesterday, Fairfax county schools gets out because of a "ice storm," that only peppered us with some light rain. No biggie, ever since the Decemeber disaster where they under-estimated 2 inches of snow and ice, and nearly 30 students had gotten in car wrecks getting to class. They have been on super pussy watch, the threat of snow = closing or 2 hr delay.
So I wake up this morning, and get up, take my shower blah blah blah, not caring to check the radio or red apple 21 for any news on a closing. Its nice outside, and theres no sign of ice. I start up the car, and head off to school. Whats this? No traffic on stringfellow? Its usually backed up like crazy, and a warning of whats to come on 66. And noone in the parking lot?
FUCK
I get home, turn on the TV, Fairfax County Schools, 2 hr delay.
Jesus Fuckin' Christ. Our school system is pussier than we ever thought imaginable. God bless you Fairfax, for taking aims to never show balls. I don't mind this two hour delay, but I mind being up at 7:38 while all my buddies are asleep cause they knew better.
So I ask the question, ever have this situation before?

Nope, I never had this happen.
The school always calls all the kids houses at like 5am to tell us if he have a delay or have off.

Yup, as a product of the Fairfax County school system, I remember plenty of botched closings and delays. What's the rumor this year, extending the svhool day by 1/2 hour, or going to school 'til July?

They dont call the houses anymore. Its done online or on the schools private TV Station. Yes Fairfax is rich.
And KC, doesnt matter to mean, Im a senior, i have one day to graduate. And if that means you guys goto school till July, I still get out on June 9th. Bizzznatch.

I see they've also dropped the English requirement since I've been out...

Back when I was in the Fairfax County School system in the 70s and early 80s the rap was always that there were parts of the county that were still rural and country and that it was tough to plow those roads and get to all of those areas.
Now Fairfax is one of the top ten counties in the country, in terms of average income, with a huge population and very little rural parts, and they still can't get their act together. Montgomery County, over in Maryland, is in the same boat.
This area stinks on ice! Literally!

I grew up in Frederick County, MD and they did a cool thing. Since the western half of the county was, well, western and got pretty mountainous (relative, of course) they would delay only those schools and open all the eastern schools. Worked pretty well for me, since I went to a western school.

I went to a private school in the city for 10 years. In those 10 years, I don't think we had a single snow day, and I recall going home early once for snow.

A couple of years ago, I trudged to work on a very rainy and windy day. I got to work to find the office was closed for inclement weather. I never thought of calling in to check! It was just rain.
Well, I did get some work done and left about noon.

I remember in September 1985 we had the day off from school because of a hurricane warning. I don't recall which hurricane it was...I think Hurricane Edward. Anyway, they gave us the day off days in advance. When the storm arrived,it wasn't any worse than any summer storm. In fact, I remember that after the storm was over, it turned into a beautiful sunny day. I guess they figure an ounce of prevention is worth the cure of a lawsuit.
See Ya!

We didn't have snow where I went to high school.
Hell, we didn't get out when we'd have about two feet of rain in a single day.

In Philadelphia we very rarely had snow days. If the buses couldn't make it, then your parents drove you. And only if the ice on the road was really, really, really bad, I'd get to stay home.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, we went to school in blizzards, literally. I dont think i had more than 5 days off through sixth grade.
Then I move to Montgomery County and we get a day off if it gets too cloudy.
I still get out on June 9th
MAY 28th, MUTHAFUCKA!!!!!!!!!!!

This year I've been checking the school's website at around 11pm or so to see if we have a 2 hr. delay or closing. The website always has the delays and closing before tv or radio. Doesn't Fairfax have that?
Why are you angry that the Virginia schools are pussies? An inch of snow or ice is a given. Don't you expect that by now?
Anway, I'm praying for a closing tomorrow, if not only a 2 hr. delay.

i got up one day, and it was snowing out. it appeared to have been snowing for 5 minutes cause absolutely no snow was even on the grass.
so i get in my car and go to school, and they lot is empty, except for 3 other asses who drove there.
so i get back home and call school, and its closed, the whole day. we ended up gettin light snow all that day and about 8 inches that night and ended up being off the next day as well

Well, as far as I can see Stafford County was one of the only ones to not close today. And what happened?
A bunch of buses got in accidents, a few flipped over, a bunch of kids wrecked their cars, and 2 kids died in a car accident on their way to school.
Stupid fucking school board.
