I have asked many people about
this and no one knows the
origin of Labor Day. Or what
exactly it means. I
appreciate that we get the day
off but I would like to know
why??????

CYYYFYYY - Never question a day off too intently, but here's the information you were looking for directly from the US Department of Labor:

"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country."

"Matthew Maguire, a machinist....founded the holiday....in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York."

"The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership -- the American worker."

Labor Day is a sham. The real day to commerate the Labor movement is May 1st(May Day). May 1st was the day workers were killed while striking. This is known as the Haymarket massacre. But the U.S. equating the Labor movement with Socialism decided to make it in September. I find it funny that some people have to work on Labor Day.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May. It not only honors our veterans, it has also become associated with the start of summer.

Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday in September to honor the American worker.

Although initially conceived as a commemoration of the Labor Union Leaders killed in Haymarket (A few police officers were killed as well), it has now grown to celebrate the American worker in general.

It is celebrated in September to mark the unofficial end of summer.

I get what you mean HK but Labor Day is so damn bastardized these days. It is completely different than its original intent.

I don't hate America itself but the American Government(the policy makers). Sure there are a lot of good things about America but that doesn't mean I won't talk about the bad.

I hope I still know you when you're an adultmasturbator, brother. It is cool as hell that you have such a keen interest in government and the general welfare of people at such a young age. I'm sure not many of your peers share your passion.

Thomas Jefferson (or maybe it was Thomas Payne, I forget) once stated "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance", and you should keep an eye on, and question, your government in every move it makes. You will learn in time, though, that effecting changes is quite difficult. Most just give up. Don't! But you will also learn in time that there are better ways to get your points across than merely by pushing buttons and enraging others. Believe me, I love stirring up the shit and getting people thinking, but I have found it way more effective to let them make foolish statements while I remain logical. Again, you will learn in time.

I know you must hate hearing that (I did too), and to be honest, I haven't changed all that much since I was a teenager. I've just learned how to be a catalyst within the confines of the rules (well, most of the time).

I guess what I'm really trying to say is don't let your anger get the best of you. You'll never get any of your points across if you can't get anyone to listen.

Sometimes I may be agressive in my messages but that's just the way it happens sometimes. I don't try to do it intentionally to rile people up.

The problem is that most people aren't too experienced with this kind of thinking so they automatically think I'm attacking them. I try to speak of the truth but sometimes it offends people.

Actually I don't hate it. You are making an intelligent statement and frankly that doesn't bother me one single bit. I appreciate where you are coming from and will take it into consideration

ADOLESCENTMASTURBATOR - Why "hate" the policymakers, or anyone for that matter. Why not simply adopt a diferent schema of viewing the world. I recomend the feminist perspective.

In broad terms, they believe that conscious raising is necessary to achieve personal and political change. In other words, change yourself, change the government and vica versa.

I think you'd be interested in many of the ideas expressed in the writings. It's one of the many theories I subscribe too, and is very helpful in helping individuals and groups.

AMB, you're an all right dude! I know exactly what you mean when you say you don't intentionally rile people up; you are just speaking your mind. Sometimes us old farts forget what we were like when we were younger; brimming with energy, confidence, and idealism. When you speak your mind, you are so sure of your convictions, you can't see why anyone would take offense at such truths. It's not a bad thing, trust me.

And I'm glad you understood the intent of my original post and didn't take offense to it in any way. I assure you, none was intended. You're a bright kid, and I'm glad you take the time to post here regularly. Whether your viewpoints are agreed with or not, you fulfill a valuable need by providing the rest of us with a unique perspective, and I, for one, thank you.

Ignore it? Never! I love a good controversy almost as much as I love a good fight, and can ignore it for about as long as a moth can ignore a flame.

Rock on, my man.

I asked some female freinds what labor day meant to them. They groaned and recalled the 2451 hour labor they each went through with each kid.
