A Dominican baby born with a second head is to undergo a dangerous marathon operation on Friday when surgeons try to sever the appendage and prevent haemorrhaging from shared arteries.

Led by a Los Angles-based neurosurgeon who successfully separated Guatemalan twins, a team will spend about 13 hours removing Rebeca Martinez's second head, which has a partially formed brain, ears, eyes and lips.

Eighteen surgeons, nurses and doctors will take several rotations to cut off the undeveloped tissue, clip the veins and arteries and close the skull of the seven-week-old baby using a bone graft from another part of her body.

Obviously, everything hits fucking close to home for any individual on this board. Nobody attacked a specific member of this site. I respect the fact that it might be a sore subect for individuals, but if a specific member isn't being taunted, then there is no fucking way you should be locking threads like this. It's absolute bullshit, and you know it. I stay quiet, usually. I run a site. I know it's fucking impossible to keep everybody happy. I don't know the details about the locking of the other thread, but I don't believe anyone was offended by the reporting of the story, but rather the joking comments that were made in the thread. I think for parents or potential parents the joking about such a horrible situation was very upsetting.

But, as I said, I really don't know the details.

I totally grasp the concept that somebody that had a potential problem when their child was born might not wanna' read the jokes.

Personally, I wouldn't have made a joke.

It was a rare occurance, based on people here LOSING THEIR OWN CHILDREN. It's not something typically done, nor will it become a regular occurance. It was done out of simple courtesy for something not usually encountered in everything we talk about here. Maybe it was mistake and not the best choice, but I readily admit I did it, and it felt right for that exception. It's not something I plan to do on a regular basis, and I don't expect to have to. The locking wasn't a big deal at the time, and I don't see why it would be now. The requests I received were unusal in the reasons (ie - something rarely, if EVER, encountered here) why they asked for the locking, so I made an exception. I guess people losing their own children is my line (And it's something typically NOT an issue with all the various topics we discuss here). I apologize if I stepped over anyone else's with it.

It won't be done for people who are offended, who "knew someone somewhere this happened to", who just don't like the topic...I did it because I had TWO seperate requests because of that reason above, which struck me as VERY odd, and something I've NEVER encountered before OR since. It wasn't some big agenda, nobody complained about it being locked, so I figured it simply wouldn't be that big a deal. If it was, I apologize.

If it's so essential for someone to HAVE to make a joke about fatal birth defects, that's not my problem. Feel free to do so here. I won't lock it this time. The posters involved with the locking request before should understand that I cut them a break, and shouldn't expect it again and again, and stay away from threads like this. I only did it once before because it felt like a semi-decent thing (Especially given the reasoning why, which to me it's a bit fucking more dramatic and traumatic than just someone being "offened", AND it's a topic that we're probably not going to run into too often here) to do and the expense was one little thread that was fading out anyways. Quit pissing like it's the end of the world. Joke away and get off the fucking box.

I don't believe in god, but I don't see how this would be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back. A lot worse things have happened. Still, it's a very sad story and my condolences, for what they're worth, go out to the family.

This, however, is just creepy...


The surgery was complicated because the two heads shared arteries. Although only partially developed, the mouth on her second head moved when Rebeca was being breast-fed.

I don't question God because God just planted the seeds. Free will and fate then take over. I believe there is an infinite amount of fates that could have and DID happen to this girl. In another dimention, Rebeca may not even have this problem, and God is never questioned. I believe EVERY possible reality is mapped out like a grid so God is aware of everything but really needs to do nothing but let life happen to all of these realities. In another hundred years here on Earth 1, Rebeca may have survived and wrote a book. We just didn't have the technology to save her at this point.
