Like radio or TV volume? Obviously, volume is a measurement of size, not of loudness. So why when we make something louder are we increasing the volume? My guess is that it hearkens back to the beginnings of radio with the vacuum tubes and all. You would increase the volume of air in one of the tubes to make the radio louder, or something like that. Does anyone have the definitive answer? This is a question I've had for quite a long time, like years, and I'd really like to know.

Not sure but some guy named 'Tone' may know something about it. You can usually find him hanging around near volume.

you're right, it has a lot to do with theater organs. To get louder on the Mighty Wurlitzer you'd pull the stop emblazoned VOLUME. And you would strain the monkeys in the basement who would be whipped that much more in order to make that much more VOLUME of air, thus to provide the pipes with it. Whippings would ensue, you monkey lover.

Well, my complete and unknowledgeable guess would be because sound fills a room, or an area. To turn it up would be to raise the volume of sound in the room, or area.

Late2partys right, its a throwback to the pipe organ, which needed a larger Volume of air to increase its loudness. The more air it had, the louder it would get. Air is measured in Volume. Its kind of like people still referring to a freezer as an "ice box", or a TV "set", even though there is no "set" of tubes within anymore.

Because I once asked someone to turn up the density and they looked at me like I was an asshole.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Hey- volume also can refer to parts of a printed work (e.g. Volume 1 or 2 or 357)...

What about that one?
