Ever wonder how ronfez.net stacks up agains the Academy in picking the best films of the year? Me either. But I have nothing better to do, so pick a damn movie.

I know that the Academy Awards as categories for foreign films but if the films not in English, it's almost always viewed as an "inferior" film to English language movies. My nomination this year would be the German film by Otto Kleinstatter "Scheie fr die Massen". This film literally moved me to tears!!!! It makes LOTR look like a college assignment done by a med student who took a film course as a filler!!!!

What is the english title of that film because I can't find it on IMDB witht that title? I've heard from some people that "City of God" is better than most of the best picture nominees. I need to see it.

I saw "The Triplets of Bellville" last night. That was an incredibly original movie. Really weird, funny, inventive satirical movie. Only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer.

"City of God" was very good, and very disturbing, but not the best film of the year (in fact, I thought it came out the year before) - in my opinion it was "Whale Rider" with "Lost in Translation," "Monster," and "Capturing the Friedmans" right behind it.

Ahhhhh, MAN! You just couldn't wait?! haha! Don't blame you. I'm still not sure when I'm going to get to go.

Lost in Translation is the only one I've seen. So I'll root for that.

I went with LOTR because it was the best of the trilogy.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Lost in Translation's the only one i've seen and will see, and i'm rooting against it. its good, but not the best of the year, and ridiculously overrated.

I'm curious how you can say that if you have not, and will not, see the other movies nominated.

I've seen every fucking movie on that list and am still pissed that Cold Mountain and 21 Grams weren't nominated! Don't get me wrong, Bad Touch, I liked Seabisquit but it was a horse movie and felt a little too Disney-ish at times and if I wanna see a feel-good movie with a horse I'll watch a Julia Roberts movie!! A-ZZZZZing!! Ah-Ge-ge-ge!! She's got the horse teeth is what I meant!! Zingy!@(%*#%!! She looky like horsey!!!@%#&!

The best was "American Splendor," but since the Academy has their collective heads up their collective wrinkly asses, I'll go with "Translation."

That said, LOTR definitely deserves best adapted screenplay, best director, and all the technical stuff it can get. I'm not a fan, but I can recognize how much of an epic undertaking the filmmaking of those movies was.

American Splendor and Lost in Translation bored me out of my mind. Lord of the Rings deserves this in a runaway.

American Splendor and Lost in Translation bored me out of my mind.

There's a shocker.

At least LOTR gave me a longer nap. Of course, the moments where I woke up to the upteenth shot of homo-hobbits looking longingly at each other left me terrified and sleepless for weeks.

I'm curious how you can say that if you have not, and will not, see the other movies nominated.

say what, that its not the best of the year compared to the others? its a good movie, but BEST PICTURE?!? yeah, it was entertaining to watch an american actor make a quick buck in a quirky place, and yeah the movie was well shot, but did you really walk out of the movie thinking this is the best of the year? that none's better?

i'll put it this way: the movie was like a night at a japanese restaurant. nice surroundings, nice meal, but you left with a little something missing, and you craved a bit more.

one of those other movies has GOT to have been better, simply by the law of averages.

I've seen Lost in Translation, American Splendor, Return of the King, Monster, Big Fish and 21 Grams and I still think Finding Nemo was the best film I've seen this year.

I whole heartedly agree it deserved a nomination but LOTR deserves it.

Wow, I thought Seabiscuit was a true Shit Sandwich. Nice, but done before, and better the first times:

-Rudy, Rocky, the Natural

put them on a horse, ya got yer Seabiscuit, in my opinion.

Because Chicago Won, It's all up in the air, but since they liked *that* piece of crap it might bode well for Lost in Translation; which might be just jinxed. Easily the best, I got a bad feeling.

I gotta see City of God, but I don't think it will win, if only because if LinT, doesn;t win, I think LofTR will.

in my opinion it was "Whale Rider"

Ugh! She literally RODE THE FUCKING WHALE! She got on a beached whale and spurred it like a horse and rode it out to sea! That's like all the stupidity of the Mission Impossible movies rolled into once scene. That should be a disqualification right there. The movie was cute, and probably a good kiddie movie, but it was completely predictable from start to finish. And the girl's acting wasn't that damned impressive. Haley Joell Osment is better in probably everything he's done. And twice as sexy.

Oh, sure - bust on the little girl who rides a whale and dismiss it as a kiddie film, but "Nemo" gets a pass on here...you cynical old coot!

I'm just now getting around to voting in the poll I started last week. I've seen all of these movies now except "Seabisquit," which I'm skipping on Ron's advice.

"Master and Commander" was a good movie, but I don't think it has a broad enough appeal to win, and it isn't my favorite.

"LOTR" was a very good movie and I'm guessing it will win, but I don't think it was the best movie out there. The story is, of course, a great one, but the way it's told in the movie it doesn't appeal enough to those of us who haven't read the books. By the end of this third movie I really didn't care who lived or died, I was just into the battles, the special effects and the hotties. Basically I wanted the hotties to live, and the hobbits to die. And the end just dragged on way too long.

Collectively the trilogy was enough of an overall achievement in filmmaking that I won't be broken up if it does win best picture.

If it weren't for the flaws in the ending of "Mystic River," which I've talked about enough in another thread, it would be my favorite for best pic. Instead, my pick is "Lost in Translation."

hey why was Peter Jackson nominated for best director? It is my opinion that those movies were not at all about directing and his part in the editing should get criticism not praise.

I liked Lost in Translation, I voted for it, but LOTR is a very close second. While I don't think Lost in Translation is overly outstanding, I did like it for Bill Murray's performance. It's pretty slow at times, but it also has it's very funny moments.
