View Full Version : Sunday Morning Political Talk Shows

I am addicted to these shows; Meet the Press, Face the Nation, McGlaughlin Group, Chris Mathews Show and even Fox News Sunday, which has really improved (in my opninion) with the addition of Chris Wallace. The only one I'm not thrilled with is ABC's George Stephenopolis show.
I am a little disappointed today with Tim Russert on MEET THE PRESS with his interview with George Bush. He did ask tough questions, but more so than not, he didn't get around to follow up questions, and let Bush get away with a one long commercial.
Bush came off well to his supporters (so far; I'm only half way through it, but I did talk with my family who saw it an hour before me, and it sounds like he stays looking good - which made my Dad delighted and my mother disgusted), which many people didn't expect; it reminds me of the 2000 debates and they lowered expectations of Bush's performance before hand, and the fact that he did all right immediately made him look like, to some, that he beat Gore (the Master De Bater).

I agree.

I partially agree. He came off a little too rehearsed at times.

I love them almost only for the fact that these shows seem to be the ONLY proof that Dick Cheney actually exists.

The second half hour this morning, Russert seemed to grow some balls, especially when trying to get to the point of Bush's military service. Still, he didn't make more of the fact that Bush admits to leaving 8 months early, giving him a pass on that one.
It's obvious now what Team Bush's plans are when "attacked" on that issue, and that is to turn this around as the Democrats attacking the National Guard, which is just preposterous.
I was really disappointed in that first half that Russert didn't ask if invading Iraq was in the planning stages before 9/11; he also let Bush get away without actually answering some of the questions. The Democrat nominees that have Met The Press have been through more, in my opinion.
The only time I don't like the Sunday morning talking head shows is when they get the same guest on; a popular tactic with this particular administration.
* This week, Connie...
* Next time Donald
* Then Dick (as Mojo said, proving he exists!)
* Then it's time for Wolfowitz
PAH!
Since the general election campaign looks to be starting well in advance of when they ususally do, I hope they don't run out of things to blather on about.

If you missed Dubya on Meet The Press, you can see it here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4209283/).
My favorite quote:
"I'm a war president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign policy matters with war on my mind."
So, so true...

I can't imagine what it is about the man that inspires confindence in conservatives. From the man's body language, his emotional reactions, and his indirect and direct responses to the questions all I see is a man who is in over his head, is defensive about being held responsible for anything, and doesn't really understand the issues he's dealing with. I would like an honest explaination from a supporter of Bush's.

That was a weird interview. The way Bush was reacting to some of the questions, you'd think he was just accused of murder. But that wasn't a hard interview at all. Russert could have gone much harder on him.

There was one funny, subtle back and forth between the two of them - Bush, at one point, leaned in and spoke slowly to make the same point for the umpteenth time, as if to illustrate that Russert was a moron.
Then later Russert asked that one question on whether war in Iraq was a choice or a necessity, and Bush got completely boon-doggled (very briefly, but still, he looked confused) and asked Russert to repeat because he didn't get it, then he seemed to get it, and insisted that it was a necessity.
Twice (or maybe even 3 times) Bush did a passive aggressive move of saying, "I'm not saying that you are distorting the information like the press does..." and at the end when Russert said he hoped Bush would return during the election year to talk some more, Bush just sat there with pursed lips.
I wonder how much this really helped, though, seeing as not that many people watch these shows except those who more than likely have already made up their mind. His big opportunity to shine was the State of the Union, and he just could not compete with Howard Dean's "Yeee-HA!"
Well...that and it was a crappy speach.

I like the fact that he makes decisions he truly believes are for the best -- not based upon what polls indicate.
Granted, I haven't exactly been thrilled with all of them.

Hasn't this been explained before on this board? I'm pretty sure it has.
Anyway, the simple answer is: many conservatives aren't thrilled with him, but, well.......
.....he's not one of you.
That's it.
It's not so much that we're all in love with the guy, it's just that we're so diametrically opposed to just about everything YOU believe in that he's good enough for us simply because he's not one of you.
You know how you liberals are all saying "anybody but Bush!" This is the converse of that. Anyone but one of you.

Right, cause if a liberal was president he or she would do crazy stuff like blow through a surplus and run up record deficits; take a gov't. program headed for bankruptcy like say, Medicare, and add expensive new benefits/liabilities without doing anything substantive to keep it solvent; cravenly add tariffs to protect industries in politically sensitive states, selling out a tradition of free trade that has proved to increase prosperity world-wide; launch 1/2 baked military adventures that turn out to have been to protect the human rights of people on the other side of the world who don't like us much; etc. etc. etc. Oh there's no telling what a liberal would do.*

*With policies like that you'd think I'd like him more. But I don't. Go figure. :)

I dont normally watch political shows of any nature, but I woke up early sunday and the McGlaughlin Group was on. Great show I must say, I'm planning on tuning into it next week. I started to watch that Meet the Press/George Bush interview thing and it just bored me. I need someone like that McGlaughlin guy to keep me interested in things I dont understand anyway.

That's EXACTLY how I feel about John Kerry. I'd get excited if Edwards were nominated, and maybe even Dean. I don't even understand how people think Kerry's the most electable either.
I'm going into this election feeling almost exactly like I did in 2000. One candidate I DON'T want as President, and another I can live with.
