What's the difference between Sunni and Shiite's

In iraq this has been an ongoing problem, just was wondering what the differences in their beliefs are.

It breaks down to lines of succession. Think of it like this, the Catholics see the Pope as following in Peter's path, taking the throne of Peter, and therefore acts with Jesus' authority. Everyone else, is protestant. that's an oversimplification, I know.


Sunni are like the Catholics, following the succession caliphs--Mohammed's successors--whom he named to succeed him. Shiites, in contrast, believe that only the heirs of the fourth caliph, Ali, are the legitimate successors of Mohammed.
