I had some scar revision surgery last year and the doctor told me to rub skin cream (any kind; cocoa butter works too) on the scars twice a day for a minute each time. The reason why you need to rub the skin cream in for a minute is that it helps break up the scar tissue so that the new skin blends in better. Just rubbing some skin cream on the scars for a few seconds won't be as effective.

The smaller scars have blended in nicely and the big scar is coming along nicely as well, so it works. Hope this helps.
