View Full Version : Service in the Armed Forced - Really necessary?

Let me preface this editorial by stating I am as unequivocally anti-Bush as Michael Moore.

That being said, I fervently disgaree with Americans who are of the opinion that thier President must serve in the armed forces to be an effective leader. Why? Do a couple of weeks in boot camp really make a better President? Some of our best military strategists never picked up a rifle.

What's the difference whether or not he served? Can't one study war and based on education, military intelligence, professional advisors and his own sense of human decency make the necessary decisions to lead a country into victory and success?

Opinions...

It isn't neccesary to become President. But it is a positive when you served your country and your opponent ducked service, or in Bush's case, served in a Guard unit he knew wasn't going to Vietnam. However, that didn't stop Clinton from beating both Bush Sr. and Dole. It means something, but it is far from a huge issue.

Who would you consider a brilliant military strategist that never served in the military?

What President in modern times has taken upon himself the task of personally making battlefield decisions?

The smartest "Commander in Chief" chooses advisers and professional military Officers who will follow his policies and direct troops with experience and expertise that no professional politician could hope to attain.

I do not want a President directly ordering troops any more than I want him to assume Alan Greenspan's duties at the FED, or telling highway engineers how to build a bridge.

I would agree with what Wadd said, but would just like to add that leadership can be found in many areas of our modern life. I think that's why Governors have a better track record in the last 25 years of being elected President than Senators or Congress men - they actually have had to make some tough decisions and lead their states through good times and bad.

An Armed Forces President isn't too shabby, but as HBox said, George H.W. Bush proved not everyone thinks that a war hero is always the best choice.

My point exactely...you assemble a group of people who do their respective jobs very well and you weigh your opinion based on thier expert advice...

I also agree...I don't want my president to make battlefield decisions....I want him focused on the country's economic and social problems while the warfare is handled by those who devote thier life to the defense of thier country...generals and soldiers...

BING-FUCKING-O.

Perfect response.

And if a president has to be like Wadd to be president, I saw we all go back to the monarchy.

Well the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986 granted a lot more authority for warplanning to the Secretary of Defense and the Component Commanders in the various AORs.

But because of the Constitution, the President IS Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and ultimately has the final say in military matters. The Framers specifically wanted civilian control over the armed forces lest we become a military dictatorship.

If I had my way all you mo-fo's would have military service. It is a disgrace that we have an "all voluntary" army. Which in truth means the people without money, the lowest classes of our society are forced to serve while the sons of Senators and Corporate executives enjoy the freedoms given to them by the deaths of minorities and the less fortunate. Its time to start the draft... no excuses..no deferrments...rich or poor you serve your country.

Fuck you dude, this is a "free" country...which means free from getting my ass killed if I feel like living for the next 70 years. You can die in a blaze of glory for this shitty country but I still have some things I'd like to do before I kick this mortal coil.

What makes you think the army is so dangerous anyway? When's the last time we suffered heavy casualities in a war? Vietnam? Korea? You know how many soldiers died during WWII? Were those soldiers all black? Please...last time I checked the American army was composed of every race, creed and color. I have friends in the army. They fucking love it. When they're not fighting the enemy, they're doing bullshit jobs around the world like everyone else...filing, typing, auto repair...most of the time they hang around and do nothing and go out drinking every night...kinda like a fireman...if there's no fire, what does a firefighter do?

Nobody FORCES the "lower classes" into doing anything. It just so happens the army doesn't require a college degree, which is why many low income families gravitate toward it....however there are MANY vocational fields out there for a low income family who can't afford college education.

Since when is this a new concept for you anyway? The rich has always prospered off the backs of the poor. Give me a break dude. If every low class minority could be a Senator or Corporate Executive why the fuck would they want to pick up a gun anyway? And who would run the country or the corporation?

You're an idiot. I've heard this bullshit a thousand times over. Sometimes you're just stuck with the hand that G-d dealt you. Deal with it.

Yea he doesnt have a choice. He in charge. Hes at the top of the chain of command for every troop in every service in this country.

A king was a the ruler of his kingdom, but when you think about, how practical is that? Can a King really manage an entire society's worth of issues? From defense to economy...public health to education?

Yes he's the commander in chief...it's really a symbolic title...it doesn't MEAN anything...he is the catalyst that sets a hulking beast of a corporation (our military) into motion. He's not out there ordering troops on the battlefield.

Well, he can order troops TO the battlefield but yes, once there the regional commanders do the actual warplanning. The SECDEF and President then approve the plan.

Yea I'm pretty sure the question was answered. We dont want someone thats never done it to be in charge of us while we do it. Theres nothing symbolic about the title when he is the fucker that directly put us over there. He actually did that, and we're actually there.
